Differential replacement

Hey guys, my brother has a 98 6cyl manual. The is now being told that the Differential is failing, and it needs to be replaced. Is this a somewhat common problem? How hard is a swap. I have always dealt with intependant rear suspensions, which make diff swaps easy. How hard is a Jeep? Can it just be rebuilt in place?

Any write ups on doing this yourself? What should it cost to have a mechanic do it?

Setting up gears is not something I'd just want to tackle on my own off of a writeup. A gear setup on a solid axle is much easier than on a IRS/IFS setup. You can do it right on the vehicle. For just one axle mechanics will usually charge between 200 and 300 bucks plus the cost of parts.

Thanks boss. I dont think I'll be able to get out and help him, unless he wants to pay airfare. Are the Jeep factory service books the way to go, or are the haynes good enough?
