Disc brakes in the rear?

I was thinking about putting disc brakes in the rear of my jeep for a couple of reasons
1. I just simy hate drum brakes
2. It would feel alot better and easier when decending down a large hill
3. And they're simpler (I know how to service disc brakes but don't know the first thing about drum brakes)
In starting this thread I just want to know approximately how much it would cost and what to do, so if they're a anyone out there who's done it let me know

Disc brakes are easier to work on, but they do not stop any better than properly adjusted and maintained drum brakes. If you still want to spend the money it's certainly doable, and there is another recent thread here with some links.

First off, what rear axle do you have?

If you have a D44, look here...

if you want to improve the braking capability of the Jeep, you do it in the front because the front does the majority of the braking....and since it looks like you've got bigger than stock tires, you could definitely use it.

I run Vanco brakes on 33s and it stops awesome. Dual piston calipers, no more knuckle flex or unevenly worn pads, and I have no worries towing my trailer in the mountains. Put your money into the Vanco front brakes if you want to improve stopping...only do the rear disc conversion if you never want to deal with drums again.

Vanco calipers? I thought about doing the rear disc conversion, but that $500 buys a lot of other stuff.

I found the cheapest way to convert to disks was the 8.8 axle conversion. I can't say enough how happy I am with the 8.8...

Vanco Big Brake Kit. Replaces knuckles, uses bigger calipers & rotors. They offer several kits for 15" to 17" wheels. I've heard they're currently out of stock tho.

I just looked up the Vanco. For that price, I'd have to drive one before I could justify the expense. I will be towing a trailer in off road conditions for overlanding, but that's a LOT of money.

It's a great idea to drive an equipped Jeep.

I can tell you I cringe when I think of the cost, but the Vanco brakes have been one of the very best mods I've done to my Jeep. The stopping power is incredible and hard to describe. It flat out works, and you'll be peeling your face off the windshield the first time you have to panic stop. FWIW, I've already got factory rear discs - and the Vancos are definitely worth the money.

I also tow an off-road camping trailer, in the Colorado mountains mind you, so I wanted a real upgrade that addressed the inherent design flaws of the stock stuff. That's the Vancos.

Good info to have, I appreciated it. My trailer is fairly heavy, being made froma Ford Courier bed, with 20 gallons of water, 15 of gas, 20lb propane tank, stove, then all my tents and sleeping bags and such i take. Sadly my transmission needs work too, so that will have to come first.

i had to replace my drum breaks last for the very first time. I found a thread on this forum. helped me out a bunch. took me 25 minutes to do my second drum after doing the other side. its not bad. but i would rather spend the conversion money on something else. just my .02

There is nothing wrong with that. Just don't expect an increase in performance other than a small difference in fade. I'm with you though, I don't like working on drums and much prefer discs.

just a FYI for ya....rear disc does not eliminate still needing to know how to service drum brakes. The emergency brake is a drum style set up that is inside the rotor on the rear. It uses a couple of very small brake shoes, and springs like a drum set up....minus the hydraulic wheel cylinder.

granted you may never have to replace them but knowing about them is a good idea. Having the right tool to work the springs and knowing different tricks makes drum brakes still less desirable to replace than disc though.

You'll have to replace em the first time you drive somewhere with your parking brake set... it won't hold in gear normally unless you gorilla yank it, and a single trip is usually enough to eat the shoes for lunch.

No drums on my warn rear disc brake kit

Full floater axles and warn full size manual hubs

warn brackets and cj disc (yes 5 on 5.5) and caddy eldarado calipers that use the caliper for the park brake function

works pretty well once you lengthen the handbrake cable attachment to get adequate cable length of pull to work the self adjusters

Ditto on the 8.8 swap! I did mine and if you have D35 might as well do it and get a better axle and disc brakes for the same amount of money. I also put drilled and slotted rotors up front with performance pads to match. Like everyone says the front brakes do most the work.
