I have a 97 tj se 2.5l and sometimes when I brake hard or soft the light for the hand brake comes on. Any ideas would be great.

The brake light will usually come on when it senses unequal pressures in the two halves of the brake system. Start at the master cylinder/booster, check for leaks, both vacuum and brake fluid. Then trace the brake lines & hoses, look for rust & weeping fluid, bad compression joints. Also check the calipers/rear brake cylinders - leaking/frozen.

It's not just for indication of the emergency brake. The light will also indicate if there is a system problem

Those two are correct. The combo valve under the master has a switch with a plunger that rides in a detent in a shuttle valve. The shuttle valve gets moved to the lower pressure side which usually is due to a problem or air in the system. As system that has been working typically does not have air in it, so there is a problem.

The third one I quoted gave you a good list of stuff to check, do it and report back.

Look on the inside of the rear drum backing plates for fluid leaks. That would be the first place to check.
