E-locker Problems

So today while doing a little wheeling i noticed my rear locker wasn't engaged. It started to make a clicking sound like it was trying to lock, but never did. Im going to take it to my buddies garage and were gonna break it down, but we dont really know what to look for? Has this happened to you? What to look for? any help would be greatly appreciated!

First thing to look for would be metal bits in the gear oil, signifying broken parts.

If I find metal shavings, and I start digging around, if something is wrong or worn out will it be noticeable? I'm just insure of what to look for/troubleshoot.

what kind of elocker is it? some of them use these little pins that are supposed to pop up into some holes opposite them, and either the holes, the pins, or both could be rounded off or broken preventing the locker from engaging.

I didn't use the most technical language there, I'll see if I can find a picture of what I'm talking about.

the term I was looking for in regards to the locker's actuation was "ball and ramp" not "pins and holes"

ball and ramp in an eaton:

most of the failures I've read about had to do with the pins that engage the side gear (you can see the pins meet the side gear at about :31)

After talking to eaton customer service, who by the way was extremely helpful, I found this write up of a problem that eaton has. Not really a big deal, except I don't entirely feel comfortable doing this myself. Over the next few weeks I'm going to order the kit, and have a buddy of mine who owns an off-road shop put it in for me.

That sucks man. I really like the idea of electronic control on a locker and was shooting for an E Locker when I swap axles. I hope this isn't a common issue...

Eaton just came out with their new 4 pin locker design for Dana axles and they are supposed to be quite a bit stronger.

I'm torn between ARB and Eaton elocker for my locker purchase.

I almost had a great deal on a 44. Geared 4.88 w/ an ARB for a grand. I'd force myself to get OBA with that kind of deal.....owner traded for a 60 at the last second. Just going to keep on keepin' on Joe Dirt style

We'll I've had the jeep for a year now, and it's been through some rough times. And also, the locker was in when I bought the jeep so who knows how long it's been, or if they've updated the design at all.

And btw my buddies had some problems with his air lines on the arb, they keep leaking, hoses falling out etc. but they are still good lockers. I can't complain about my e locker, except for this little mishap.
