Ecm swap & skim key

Friday I will be doing a trans swap. I have a 99 with the 32rh. My son has a 97 with the ax15. We will be swapping. My question is, I have the skim key and my sons 97 does not. I know I'll have to swap the ecm, thank you Jerry for the info on that, what about the key? From what Ive gathered theres a skim key module right next the the ignition in the steering column. Will I have to pull that and put it on the 97 to go with the ecm? If thats the case, wondering, I have a spare uncut and unprogrammed skim key. Can I go have it programmed to my jeep now before the swap, then later have it cut to my sons jeep? Hoping to have this project completed by sat noon. But if there is a key programming issue, then we'll have a dead jeep for the weekend. And I dont have a spare veh. Ive read several posts that dance around this subject, but havent found a specific answer.

You will need to swap the SKIM module to the 97 but yes it should work. Do not plug the non SKIM ECM in the harness until the module is removed from your jeep. There is a way to program the SKIM key with your jeep I think but I believe you have to have two active keys.

Thank you very much. Very helpful. The 97 should have the plug in for the module already in the the steering column, right? Then i should still be able to use my exsisting skim key in the 99 even if it doesnt have the module anymore.?if not i can have a plain one cut. I only have one key. But if itll work then i can get by with putting the skim key in the steering column on the 97 and use the original key until new skim key is cut. Hopefully.

You can just fix the skim key under the column near the skim modual and forget about it if you don't care about the security. Also B&G Chrysler can turn the skim off if you find you need to.

Thanks. Ya Im going to take my 99 to a local shop. The owner worked for chrysler and explained to me about the skim key. He told me to bring mine over today and is going to plug it in to see if he can turn it off. He thought he should be able to. But wont actually do it until everything is swapped over. He was thinking that if I didnt have it turned off then Id have to get a new wiring harness to accommodate the skim module in the 97.

Have you had that done? Does B&G have a new DRB that will allow them to reprogram the PCM?

Not doubting just verifying because I just swapped PCMs between two 2001 TJs, one with SKIM, one without and also for a trans swap and the Chrysler DRB would not turn the SKIM off in the one it is activated in.

It also would not synch up a SKIM module on the steering column that had been programmed to a different vehicle.

Other than finding out if the 97 has the SKIM plug in the harness by the column, he doesn't need everything swapped over. I just used one rig to program keys and SKIM to a different vehicle simply by plugging in all the matching components.

I've also done that before when a gent in the Virgin Islands lost his keys for a TJ with SKIM. He next day shipped the PCM and ignition lock cylinder to me, I acquired the keys from the dealer off of his VIN and then used my vehicle to plug everything in, hook up his module and then program the keys to everything with a DRB.

My biggest concern with what you are doing is finding out if the PCM's are compatible. As far as I know and can find out, they are year specific.

I had B&G do some tuning for me and the SKIM somehow got activated in shipping. The guy I spoke to says it happens and turned it off for me no problem.

Well I'm going to start the swap in just a few min. I took my jeep to Complete Automotive here in town, and he plugged in his computer to my Jeep. He said that he can rewrite the vin to the computers after the swap. I can keep my skim key. Told me should be no problem. So I asked how much, Brett said about 45 min of work and prob 40-50 bucks. I feel relieved. Bad thing is that I don't want to wait until Monday to see if the transmissions work properly. Oh yes almost forgot, He's kind enough to make a house call to do the work. Found a new friend. I'll keep you posted.

That's seems a bit odd. If the SKIM could somehow be activated in shipping, logic states that all the non SKIM PCMs being shipped around in daily drivers would randomly be activating.

just letting everyone know it worked swapping the 97 ecm to the 99 but we took the 97 to complete auto and he had to order a new ecm for a 98 since they didnt have skim in the autos. we couldnt keep the 97 running but now with the new 98 ecm in the 97 it runs great. the 99 runs great aswell with alot less money dumped into it. $500 for the 97 and $42 for the 99.
