Engine compatibility

So the engine in my '04 Wrangler just threw a rod....

Trying to figure out which engines will swap into my Wrangler with minimal fuss... Will the 4.0 from an XJ work? How old can I go?

You can only swap in engines that are the same year or newer in order to pass smog checks and inspections.

This isn't something I'm concerned with. I just want to know if everything from my '04 engine will fit on an XJ 4.0, or an earlier TJ motor...

I don't know EXACT differences but the blocks changed in the TJ's around 2001-2002 (I think). I know the XJ don't bolt up and Some bosses for bolting accessories were relocated. TJ's with the AC unit on passenger top side have different bosses than those with the AC on the drivers side like my 04.

I tried to match older accessory brackets to my 04 from an XJ with no success without mods.

After 1999 I think, they switched to coil packs?!? Not 100% on the year but something to keep in mind

2000-2006 TJ or WJ long blocks will work. you may want to avoid the 00-01 years to avoid the 0331 non-TUPY head cracking issue.

basically 2002-2004 TJ is your best bet. 05-06 TJ blocks used different sensors, OPDA & a different throttle body.
