98 TJ, 4cyl
Last week on my way to work, without any warning (no weird noise, no hesitation from engine, all guage normal etc..) the engine just died. It would crank but not start.
got it tow back home. since then im trying to figure it. I changed the crankshaft position sensor, it look like the connector touched the exhaust and melted, also the wire were exposed.
I checked all the fuses, swap the relay around no luck.looked for loose wire, ground but don't see anything.
I have no spark at the plug, and now the needles on the dash don't move after I turn the ignition on. also my scanner will not communicate with the computer.
I am thinking the computer is bad, but before I change this expensive part I want to make sure it is bad. Is there a way to check it ?
I also want to make sure it get power, but don't have a diagram for it.
That sensor gets five volts from PCM plus a sensor ground and a signal wire
Be very careful swapping around PCM all 99 and up and possible 98 have skim ability and just three starts in a vehicle with a skim module and the feature is irreversibly activated effectively bricking your PCM
thank you, sorry for the late reply, I have been sick with the flu and now it became a bronchitis...
I check #17 at the PCM, I am not getting any power there, I need to find where the power to the PCM is coming from. I let you know if I find anything.
thanks again !!
finally got it to run... i changed the cranckshaft position sensor and the wire/connector that were melted, changed the distributor rotor and the "distributor switch plate" then found that the fuse F21 was not getting power, replaced fuse #10 behind glive box and voila !!!..
Mine did the exact same thing. I spent two weeks chasing down electrical problems. I was getting to power to the coil from PCM. One day I decided to run a jumper +12 from the battery with an inline fuse and of course it started right up...I shoved that wire into the plug btw...I disconnect wire from battery so it doesn't drain...came out later and started it not remembering to hook wire back up to battery...Sweet Georgia Brown it started and runs like a champion...I guess the plug wasn't making good contact with the pins on the ignition coil so the shoved in wire gave it better connection. I had previously checked everything with a multimeter three times.
my 2000 just quit twice yesterday, while checking for the problem, I wiggled the battery cable. seems I had a bad battery connection. replaced the battery cable end and no more problems.
If your jeep just stops for no apparent reason, check the battery cable. My 97 did this also after I changed the battery. forgot to tighten the cables.
in my particular problems, the engine just died while driving, it would cranck but not start.
but you are right, many time poor battery connection is the cause of problems
