engine lifters

i have a 97 tj with the 2.5 engine, i purchased it 3 weeks ago, it sat for 2 years, i changed all fluids right away, it has a lifter noise that seems to be getting louder, i have driven 1000 miles and now it is pronounce, 120 thousand miles on engine, am picking up lifters and push rods and am changing them out, can some one tell me how tight the rocker arms have to be, they are non adjustable, right? any info would be apreciated,,,,, jim

This is dejavu!!! My name is Jim Jacobs and I bought a tj 2.5 a month ago which had been parked for 2yrs (wrecked and repaired). I have no clue on your question but the coincidence of name and even it funny.

cam should be replaced when changing lifters, due to the wear on the cam. that noise could also be from a flat cam. best to get repair book for torque specs, can't remember off the top of my head.

I have heard that sea foam sometimes will help with lifter noise, but I have not tried it myself. I am sure others can confirm or deny this.

I recently changed out oil in my 03 rubicon and started getting lifter knocking on cold start ups. I dropped some cleaner in the oil and now driving it around for about 300 miles to flush out the lifters. I put 10w30 oil in her as well. I'm thinking that could also be the cause of the knocking. I plan on changing the oil tomorrow and putting some 5w30 in it. If you are using a heavier weight than what 5w30... i suggest you do try an oil change too...IMHO

I would also run some thick STP oil treatment or Lucas (with your normal oil) until you can get 'em fixed. The thicker oil will coat the parts and help soften the blow each time the valves open and close.

thicker the oil (cold start) harder it is to push up to vital parts of your engine. As to my issue (lifter knock until the engine warms up) If you have lifter knock ALL the time, i'm sure it time to buy a cam/lifter kit and swap em out.

I just changed lifters in my 02 4.0 the torque specs for rocker arms was 19ft pounds. Was hoping that fixed my problem but like always that wasnt it. Somehow I broke the skirting off the bottom of #2 piston. well a grand later it was on the road. Good luck but check the book for the specs on that motor

Some people add ATF to the oils and let it run for a while, then change the oil again. It will sometimes clean out the system and quiet it down.
