Most auto parts stores will pull the codes for you. Post them here and we can help you.

I'm assuming so....
Here is a quote from the link I posted: "This method should work for Jeeps up to 1997."

Works on our 97.

And you have what sounds like two problems. One of course the check engine lamp.
The other is the old loose connections at the instrument cluster. Easy fix, do a search here for instructions.

It should work on all.. Cycle from on to off and stop on the "on" position on the third time. That was a function installed by Chrysler on almost all their models (Of trucks & Jeeps)

Codes will not appear immediately - wait a few seconds.
The 97 models have 2 digit error codes which are different to later models.
Codes will appear in the odometer and the CEL will also 'flash' the code, ie for '55' the CEL will flash 5 times, pause, flash 5 times.
So if there are several codes to display it could take a while.

55 isn't an error but will display to let you know the check has been done - even if you have no error codes to display.
So, if you do not get at least a '55', it means you have not cycled the ignition key correctly.

'12' will almost certainly display - this indicates the battery has been disconnected recently or there has been a momentary loss of power (very common).
But '12' will not trigger the CEL, so there will be other codes which you can check against the list in the link posted by Gold Miner.

Codes appear on a 97, but the auto parts store diagnostic gives a lot more information.

When my 97 detects a misfire, the AutoZone gadget will even tell me what cylinder.

Why make a post then never respond back to say the help was helpful.
