Engine Sputtering

Hello All,

My son recently purchased a 1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport. He is really enjoying it. He came to me yesterday describing what seems like a fuel intake issue that just started a couple days ago. I gave it a test drive and this is what it's doing.

It begins to sputter when I'm moving in 1st and 2nd gear, as if it is starved for fuel. When I shift to neutral the engine seems to clear up and run normal. Once I get it up to 3rd and 4th gear its seems to clear up and run normal.

The engine is a 4.0 straight six.

Any help would be appreciated.
