Engine swap

Well for some time now I have being dealing with an issue of my engine temp pushing 230 while driving up hill on long stretches of highway like interstate and even did it once while wheeling but for the most part never does it at slow speeds.I have replaced fans(electric and stock clutch type),Tried two other radiators(stock and all aluminum that is in it now),new water pump and water neck,3 t-stats,all new hoses and even tried new belt thinking the water pump pulley may be slipping and all to no avail.I have decided it has to be internal like the pressure builds in the coolant system at higher RPMs causing the coolant not to flow correctly and caused by a head or gasket problem.Anyway to my question!!! As some of you may also know I got water in my tranny a few months back while wheeling and it is now showing signs of internal failure also(slippage).I have found a complete engine ,trans and T-case for $1300 from a 99 Wrangler with 70K and wonder what all will I need from the donor Jeep???It has a distributer like mine but will I need computer and harness along with trans computer or is all mine compatible with the 99 engine and trans????Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!

what year do you have? a 99 motor and trans will bolt in to a 97-99 and use the same computers and wires.

Yup, and if I'm remembering correctly all of the accessories are in the same place on the motor for that year as well.

Assuming that you have a 97-99 which is the case since you stated it has a distributor then that motor will bolt and plug right in. You really don't need the tranny and TCase unless you just want to put the whole drive train in from the donor rig.

Sorry about that!!!!! Yes mine is a 97 and the donor is a 99.I was asking mostly due to the fact I was told a month or so ago that a tranny from a 99 would not work in my 97 so I let it get away to be told later that it would have worked.I could have got it for $300 with only 64K on it but this is the way I think I will go at this point if everything is a simple swap ,without changing/bypassing and cutting and making it fit.If I have to do that I may as well try to find the motor and tranny from a wrecked newer model Chevy truck.

Oh yeah I really do need the tranny My tranny is the main reason for the swap.I have been dealing with the overheating for well over a year now and have got used to what I have to do to keep it in check while driving interstate but the transmission has started to shutter really bad from take off and then slip from 2nd to 3rd.The T-case is basically just being threw in.It would be nice it were a 241.

Looks like I am buying the whole Jeep so if any one needs any parts let me know.I will decide in a few days if I am swapping the engine and tranny or pulling my body and putting it onto the 99 chassis. But even then I will have extra front axle,t-case,gas tank, belly pan, grill, some body parts and many other items for sale.

Well I did buy the whole Jeep today.I go tow it home Sunday.I will begin the process of changing my body over onto the 99 frame in a few days.I will put up some pics of the progress.I did find today the 99 is a 5 speed so one more thing to change over as well(clutch and brake peddles)

Well , just a heads up.I have opted to swap motor, trans and case instead of putting my body on the 99 frame. This thing must have came from the salt belt area and the rails are covered in surface rust.Anyway a 97 and 99 are not the same nor are they a direct swap.I am swapping wiring harness, computer and all because I am going from auto to standard plus the injectors are different and some of the other plugs are also but I have the motor, trans, case and harness all pulled on the 99.I will start on pulling the motor on mine today.

Yeah I have the engine/trans and case out of both jeeps sitting in the shop floor and planed on dropping the new in mine today but didn't get to.The good thing is the wiring harnesses come out real easy and lucky I bought the whole jeep for the engine harness,PDC with harness and computer all had to be swapped into my 97 not to mention the clutch/brake pedals and floor pan/cover were the shifter comes up through the floor. It is turning into more of a job than I thought. But I hope to have engine in and running by the weekend.

Well I ran into my first big snag today.I got the engine and all in,wired it all up and it is not getting any power to the guages, coil, fuel pump and so on.All the lights work, the radio, heater and everything inside works but the guages are dead and the starter will turn the engine over but no spark or fuel. The plugs plugged right into the 100way connector under the dash but I am thinking changing from 97 to 99 the 99 has the Sentry Key Immobilizer were the 97 does not.The 99 has an ASD relay were the 97 did not.Now I can hook a hot wire to the B3 circuit(fused ignition switch output st-run) were the ASD(automatic shut down relay) goes and get power to the all the guages and the fuel pump but still no fire to the coil. Can anybody help me here???????????

Yeah I tried that also.It ran way to cold and actually would load up from not burning the fuel very well in town and it would still reach its boiling point on interstate. You could hit an off ramp and drive slow back over to the on ramp and with in that short minute or 2 time it would drop back from 220-230 to 180-190 just after slowing down on the off ramp.I have not pulled the head yet but I figure I am going to find the problem then or when it is cleaned and tested.Anyway I have the 99 engine and trans in and running great now.I ended up not having a choice but to change all the wiring over to the 99 wiring even the dash harnesses. The only wires left that are of the 97 are the ones running to the tail lights.I am having trouble finding the A/C discharge line that goes from the compressor to the condenser. The one with the high pressure switch on it.I need that line if any one could help I would appreciate it very much.
