I recently replaced the thermostat on my 04 TJ,4.0 to address the engine malfunction light. All went well , but as I drained the rad I noticed the rad petcock was in bad shape but I was able to get it from leaking. A week or later it started leaking, I tried to snug it up ( hand only) , it broke and I lost all the fluid. Replaced petcock and antifreeze but the temp gauge is only reading about 150-160. I have been trying to get all the air out but I still am not getting the right reading. Top hose is hot but I ann not sure how hot. Given the thermostat is only 2 weeks old what would be the best approach on this. Thanks.
If you have a fail-safe thermostat that has locked open, you can simply remove the "fail-safe" mechanism (cut it off) and the thermostat won't lock open again.
Thanks everyone, changed stat and solved the problem.
