Engine temp question

OK, the standard thermostat in the 04 TJ is a 195. My temp gauge always reads around 210. Is that what everybody else is seeing? I know if I drop the temp to around 180, then the computor richens the fuel mixture thinging the engine hasn't warmed up yet. Has anybody found a way to trick the computor to thinking that is normal, and go to closed loop at lower temps? If not, I'll pull up a scematic on All Data, and find a way. If it's already been done, please clue me in.

210 is the norm. Mine sits there even pulling grades.

As far as I know there is no way to get the computer out of it's fail safe mode if you are using a 180 thermo. The I-6 was designed to run at that temp and likes to run at that temp. If you are wanting to do anything to keep your motor happy then you should work on lowering the engine compartment temps.

YOu can runn a secondary fan on the front of the radiator and then add some louvers to the hood. That should keep ya plenty cool... but the 4.0L is designed to run optimally at 210

190-200 is ok... just depends on your location. And chicago being a cooler place, it will run a tad colder.

get a grille cover for the winter time. 190-200 is perfect for the summer. I wouldn't mess with it.

Back on topic (not that I mind the side banter) my engine runs at 200* just about all the time. I dont think I have seen in fluxuate any more than 5* since I've owned it. Its gettin an aluminum radiator, high flow water pump, and electric fan conversion though in a while. That may make it run a bit cooler even.

It shouldn't run cooler - the 4.0L is designed to operate at 200-210 degrees. Making it run any cooler than that will cause emissions issues, and your fuel mileage will suffer.

IMO - I would not mess with it, 210 is on spec. It's been 80-90 here and I'm running a winch on the front, in traffic and the needle does not budge.

If you want to feel better, flush your system out and refill with new A/F that has H.O.A.T (don't use the general purpose cheap stuff).
