Exhaust Manifold Question

Ok, it seemed as if I had an exhaust leak towards the engine, so, with further inspection I noticed that the flange with two bolts that attaches the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold was loose. So, I sprayed the bolts with penetrating fluid and let it sit for about 24 hours. As soon as I applied a little pressure, the bolt broke. I tried to get the bolt out of the exhaust manifold but, it is stuck. I called the Jeep dealer and he said I would have to bring it in and let them drill the stud out of the manifold because it was pressed into the manifold from the factory. Is this true? Or, should I be able to drive the bolt through with hammer and large punch?

Are you talking about the flanges that attach the pipes together? If so you can try driving it through with a hammer and punch. If you have a drill and a drill bit try drilling it yourself. Then when you get it out just put a bolt and nut on it and call it a day. No need for a dealer.

thinking- is there room to make a new hole next to the existing hole? If so drill new holes then put new bolts in it and leave the old ones.

Yeah, I tried hammering it out with a punch and it didn't want to go anywhere. The dealer said they would have to drill it out, I layed underneath and tried to get a drill to do it myself, but, the darn thing wants to walk all over the hardened bolt. I guess I will try driving it some more with a larger punch and a mini sledge and see what that does.. I let you know.. thanks

Get a punch with the smallest sharpest tip on it and make a impression on the bolt that way when you put the bit on the bolt to drill it will have a pilot spot to start and not walk all over the place.

Thanks to everyone's input. I ended up getting a 7/64 bit and started a pilot and then grabbed a 5/16 bit and drilled her out. Works great now. NOW, I noticed that it was missing an exhaust manifold bolt, the very rear one. Does anyone know what size that bolt is so I can go get one tomorrow morning?

Take another out and match it up. Make sure you spray it good with PB blaster or WD-40. Are you sure its just missing and the bolt didn't snap?
