Recently researched this on a 95 2.5 were doing, did a Flomaster 44 with cat delete and stock tailpipe. Sounds good, throaty, and not ricey. Just a little loud though...

I removed a flowmaster super 44 that the PO had on my Jeep. with the 4.0 it had a terrible drone on the highway, overall too loud.
I picked up a $30 thrush from advance auto & much happier with it. Not too loud but better than stock.

I installed a flow master 40 yesterday on my 91 YJ jeep with no cat, it made it sound throaty but on acceleration around 2500 to 3000 rpm it was really loud like drone, I'm currently putting a cat back on it to see if that makes a difference. Just my .02.

Yea i really like the sound of the Borla ones on the 6cy. But all the youtube videos ive watched sound just terrible when its put on the 4cy, like some teenagers Honda civic. Banks, magnaflow, borla, etc they all have the same raspy noise. So i gave up for a while and just figured i will have to stick with my stock exhaust. If anyone has a link or video of there own i would appreciate it.

Have the Dynomax Super Turbo Cat Back System on my 4.0 98 TJ since 2011, sounds great without that heavy loud drone. Also have the Borla Headers before I installed this muffler so it contributes to how they sound.

I found a video of the thrush turbo, and same problem when the revs get high it starts to sound like a honda. Like i stated above im starting to think i might just have to deal with the stock exhaust.

The thrush welded has a low rumble but doesn't sound like a ricey glasspack at higher rpms. But it will never sound like a v8.

They are different. The Thrush Welded has more of a design like a FlowMaster..but half the cost.

A Flowmaster 2 chamber looks like this:

I wouldn't delete the cat. There is no power gain, it confuses the o2 sensors, and its illegal. Just keep it on and keep it legit to avoid hassles.

Any muffler with a baffled design will make more noise and tend to drone more than a muffler withba straight through.

I have a 4.0 with a flowmaster and gutted cat. I made the tail pipe custom to tuck it up higher than the gas tank skid and keep it out of the way to prevent snagging. This is what it sounds like out on the trail. Its not bad on the street or highway, if you have the top off it does drone a bit, sounds kinda boat like but I don't mind it. Ive heard much more obnoxious exhausts on TJ's

Doesn't sound too bad

I put on a knock off flowmaster on a 2.5 with a deleted cat and it was too loud so then I added a glasspack in place of the deleted cat and did the anti fouler mod on the rear o2 and it quieted it down substantially with no check engine light and a very tolerable exhaust until you get into the loud pedal.. this was when my cat decided to empty all its contents into the stock muffler. the seat of my pants tells me its quicker with the trade off being just slightly more noise that I can live with....

I ran one exhaust set up on all my inline motors over the years, weather it be a 2.5, 4.0, or a 4.2. You'll think im crazy, but honest to god it sounds great. Get the longest glass pack you can find. I used 30 inchers. Nice low rumble, non raspy & absolutely no drone. I plan on using the same setup on my current project. I know it sounds nuts, but the longer the glass pack the quieter they are & the 30" packs sound great on an inline motor.

The problem with glass packs is that it does not take long for the glass packing to get carboned up or even burned out, then in a matter of time its like running a straight pipe and sounds like azz. (I have had them in the past)

I looked at a rubicon LJ that had the banks intake/exhaust system on it. It was deep and throaty, it didn't "drone" exactly, but it did have a frequency range around 35 mph or so that was a tad loud for a jeep for my taste. It was a soft top. I would have pulled it all off and sold it if I bought that rig but it wasn't terrible sounding.

It was a deep rumble that opened up to a throaty growl, definitely not fart can Honda ricer lame, just a tad too loud for my taste given the vehicle. I had a 6" dump tube on my turbo Subaru out of the external Wastegate so I have nothing against stupid loud exhaust it's just that it wasn't for my taste on a jeep. Maybe it would have been perfect with a stock intake. If you like deep and throaty exhaust you'll probably dig it.

It would take a long time for a 30" pack to blow out on a 2.5L. I ran them for years on a 300 hp 302 Ford. After 15 years they finally started getting loud.
