Exhuast Leak

I have a small exhuast leak. i think it is coming from the intake manifold. I have a 2003 2.4L 4cyl. Anyone have any tips or suggestions on fixing it? I am about ready to go trade it in, if it ain't one thing it's another.

I'm guessing you are talking about the exhaust manifold, I guess the names are interchangable. Anyways, I had the same problem, along with almost every other Jeep. I figured you could weld it closed with a piece of metal but a few people said that the headers would get too hot and blow the piece off and cause more damage. Not sure if I got fed a load of bs or not. Sorry I didn't help any.

I've heard of exaust manifolds being welded as a temp fix. However your better off just replacing it. Don't drive it long with the leak.

Jeeps are famous for their cracked exhaust manifolds. Your best odds are to replace it and hope for the best. A cracked exhaust manifold sounds a bit like clicking doesnt it? It gets faster as you increase the rpm, it slows down as you release the gas...

Welding it is a waste of time.

No alternatives?

I'm asking because I noticed a slight "vibration" exhaust sound only at just the right RPM. It's hardly noticeable, but I notice any slight change in the way the Jeep runs or sounds. Either the sound is coming from something loose in the muffler or from the exhaust manifold.

I went underneath it to check the exhaust while it was NOT running and the only part making noise seemed to be from the area of the exhaust manifold.

What kind of sound does the exhaust manifold leak make? Could the exhaust manifold be loose?

Maybe it is the exhaust manifold? It's hard to tell where the noise is coming from while driving, but it happens in 1st gear at right around 1250 RPM.

well u should be able to hear the ticking at any rpm especially idle.. obviously easier to hear in the lower rpm since its less engine noise...

sorry I never replied back with what I found out. Well I typed exhuast leak, but meant intake manifold. Sorry for the confusion. Well it turned out that the o-ring seals for the intake were leaking and the intake was full of oil. Changed them, the exhuast was leaking but it was from the manifold and the down pipe (think thats what is called) was loose. So we tightened that up and she purred again. It seems that I am still loosing oil somewhere but I'm not sure where. The head gaskets seemed to be fine, no huge plums of smoke, no burnt oil smell, just using oil alot faster than normal. The motor has about 67k on it. any more ideas? I am think that there is a stuck ring and oil is getting by that. Remember this is the 2.4L 4cyl. I really dont want to replace the motor but if I do ..........V-8.

my jeep has the same problem. i had someone weld it and it didnt hold. best bet is a new one.

and yes you can hear a ticking if its bad, mine has a 3inch crack.. lots of lost power...

My exhaust manifold leaks but the ticking sound stops after it is warmed up. The sound goes away and the Jeep runs fine with no noticable loss of power (4 cyl).

Okay, quick question... Does this "sound" of a possible exhaust leak sound like a rapid sputtering at high RPMs? If so, I would check your headers. Like many of the guys said, Jeeps are famous for exhaust leaks, aka cracked headers. I do agree with the others in that you shouldn't weld the crack, just replace them. JBA makes a good set, I wouldn't rely on anything or anyone from eBay. Got stuck on that one once on my XJ. Another question, when you get your sputtering at the high RPMs, if you do, does your engine cut out/tach out sooner than normal? That there is a confirmed exhaust leak due to back pressure, or a possible timing issue. The 4cyls are easier to see the headers rather than the 4.0s. LOOK EVERYWHERE ON THE HEADERs/Exhaust manifold, I can't stress that enough. As much as where it isn't, that's exactly where it is.

get one from ebay for about 100 bucks.

If you can find long headers, go for them but to this day i have not seen ones that fit our 4.0 tjs

When you say long headers, do you mean the ones with the flex joints? Or am I confused?
