exhuast questions

i got an 03. i wanna know what all is on the exhuast on my jeep. i want somethin diff but dont wanna make it so it dont pass inspection. the o2 sensors are all by the top part of the y pipe so what are them 2 canister lookin things by them?are those the cats? and why is there another one by the muffler when there is no wires runnin to an o2 sensor there? can u just cut that one off and run a muffler/ glass pack from there??

Those 2 canister looking things are mini cats, then the other one is another cat. Some say you can take the cats out, but in some states you will not pass emissions with out the cats, such as california. If your looking for sound, get a muffler (such as flowmaster 40) and call it a day. There is little to no gain from putting a full exhaust on.

i dont plan on full system. if it wont hurt to the the big cat out sense there is no o2 sensor there, i wanna just cut it there and run somethin there, and have it come out in front of the rear tire cuz i have enough space that it will be between the skid plate and rear arm. just wanted to make sure it wouldnt hurt to take the one out but leave the 2 small ones

Agreed. You will not see an increase of power or MPG with a new muffler, but it will sound better. I prefer the Flowmaster 50 series, but some love the DYnomax turbo mufflers and other swear by Banks products. Any of them will sound better than stock.

You will run into issues taking the cat out. You're CEL will come on. You can get it turned off, and its not going to make any difference in performance, or hurt your engine. Although some people on here claim to have taken cats out and not pulled a code.

im just lookin at the lenght of pipe. im gonna do my stuff myself and dont wanna mess with a buch of it, there would be no bends or anything to deal with. just makin sure. i mean why would it have a big cat if the mini ones are doin the job for the 02 sensors anyway?? crazy

also, you have to check emission laws in your state. In Monument, co, they dont even require an emissions test. In California, you need emissions, and if you dont have cats, you dont pass. Another note, just because there is no o2 sensor on the last cat doesnt mean its useless! If jeep put it there, its for a reason. If you take that cat out, your entire exhaust is going to perform differently.

^^^ Disagree. You will not have any issue with a check engine light or any computer issues by removing the secondary cat. There are no sensors associated with the 2nd cat. I have removed that one on my wife's TJ without issue. It does give the jeep a deeper, more aggressive sound as the exhaust is no longer having to pass through all of that cat material. Now, with that said, Indiana does not have any emissions testing that must be passed so, if your state does, I'd say you shouldn't remove it. If you don't have to worry about emissions testing, then I say remove the cat. I did.

You are more than likely correct on this one. However, from what I have read on it you "CAN" run into problems. I have not done it personally, so dont have first hand experience, but greatly considered it and ended up not doing it because I am relocating back to cali soon and I have to have it to pass...

i mean they most shops around here only hook up the computer and roll with it. if they look under and see the mini cats then it should pass. they are "cats" of course anyway so dont see why it shouldnt.

Could you just gut it, instead of removing it completely to pass. I know we did that on my Tahoe (I think it was the Tahoe).... :-/

There's an o2 in the top of it on my 04 rubicon and I have to pass deq. A total of five o2s are in the system 2 for fuel ratio for 135 and 246 two more one for each pre-cat and one in the top of the main cat. If you remove the monitoring cats you Will set a code and get a mil light.

No problem. I've worked several years in a exhaust shop and on your 03 you will not have any problem. In fact, you will notice your AC is a little cooler in some case sitting still. That cat runs very hot. Here is a idea for you if you have anyone local can bend pipes without a problem. I run a true duel system and run a resonator on each pipe, then into a duel in duel out Flow Master knock off called "V-Force" so the system still has a crossover. Sounds deep, mellow, and clean.
