Fan only blows out defrost vents...

I told you guys when I joined that you would get sick of all my questions! Any reason why air only blows out the defrost vents? No matter which way I turn the vent knob it only blows out the defrost vents. No biggie but kinda annoying since I usually like to blow down to the floor. Thanks!

Actually I was talking about the heat. Haven't tried with the AC yet since it's been too cool...

This is a common TJ problem. Mine's the same way, but if I fiddle around with it enough, it'll start to change to the right setting. There's kind of a trick to it, where I have to bring it all the way to the opposite end and then back, and then switch it gently through each setting until I have the one I want - huge pain.

Inspect your vacuum lines under the hood, common area for leaks are the end at number 5 falling off, or the line at number 8 cracking.

If it is cracked anywhere then it defaults to defroster

Funny, I fixed this by accident then you guys chimed in. I was cleaning the throttle body and noticed #5 was completely off. I grabbed a hose clamp and stuck her back on and noticed everything else was working fine. Weird! What are some other symptoms of #5 being disconnected and what the hell does it do!

I'm very surprised its not the ECU controller on TJ's its a very common problem that they go bad.

Not that i rilly know but i was reading about the 10 most common TJ problems and that was #2 (I think) right under the radiator issue... that and mine is bad lol

Glad u got it fixed

What is an ECU and what is the 'radiator issue'? Great, more things for me to obsess about after the OPDA, trackbar, steering click....

The radiator issue is that i have no idea why they used plastic on the top and bottom and where it mates up with the rest of the radiator the seal breaks As far as i know there is now way to fix it other than replacement

Thank you for this. I found a broken (it looked cut) vacuum line between 2 and 6. Had the wife out in the garage in her PJs working on the Jeep at 11:00 at night (needed smaller hands.) Wish I had stumbled over this thread before August in Florida but repairs are rigged and now all systems are go - thanks again!

fixed it

I just drove from TX to FL with no AC... it totally sucked. So I had someone tell me it was the "pneumatic" tubes behind the dash. After arriving in FL soaking wet in sweat and dehydrated, I decided to tackle it.

I removed the center console and found the tubes (drank some water), but everything was connected. Followed the tubes around in the dash, but got lost (drank more water). Went inside, fired up the laptop, found this post, went outside (after more water), removed the battery, the battery plate, then found the disconnected VACUUM hose. The end was cracked. Came back inside, drank more water, looked at the picture in this post again (which totally made sense now), removed the box, cut the cracked part of the hose, reattached it to the box thingy, wiretied it and badabing... Cold HVAC for the ride back to TX. That HVAC hasn't worked for over 4 years and now it's spittin ice cold air. It's like a new JEEP. I would have taken pics, but I didn't have my cam or phone. I did wanna say that this totally worked. One thing though - what is that box? It felt hollow and empty. It looked sealed so I didn't want to be too curious and kill the cat.. er... AC.

This site rocks!! I'll make sure I post some other projects I have lined up - with pics next time.

Oh.... drank a beer to celebrate!!!

That box is a vacuum reservoir. It helps maintain enough pressure during engine loads for everything vacuum related to operate how it is suppose to.

I had this same issue and the guy at my local garage picked it up and fixed it for me ... It was great going from no control to full control but now I can only use vent speed 3 and 4, 1 and 2 do not work :-/. Any ideas?

Dealer I bought the Jeep from had the fan switch fixed before delivery (it's a problem common to most Daimler Chrysler vehicles). $268 from the dealer to replace the resistor. I've seen them on eBay for cheap (I'd swear under $20, but don't hold me to that). It sure seems to me that it would be a 5 minute job.

I have the same problem. first I felt a leak every once in awhile on my feet while I was driving, but didn't do anything about it because I didn't use the a/c (had the top off) but now once I put the top back on and started using it, it will only blow air out the defrost vent and only slightly at the vent by my feet. I checked under my hood and according to that diagram, number 5 was disconnected. so I connected it but it didn't change anything. any advice?

Did you check the other spots for any cracks or disconnections?

Also did you just reattach it then try it, get nothing an shut it off? If that is the case try driving it around the block and get it to build vacuum back up in the canister (number 8)

Wow. I've driven around during the two hottest months of the Arizona summer with this same problem. Thanks to that diagram I figured out my issue and have a/c in the vents again. Mine was also #5.

Was your idle not all wonky? That's the first thing I notice.

Hmm. When #5 comes off the RPMs drop really strangely, or not at all. I notice instantly because I can't shift without using the clutch -- but then again you may have an auto.

I have the 5-speed. Never noticed the RPM's not dropping. I'm going to have to see if it drives any differently tomorrow.
