Fast/Slow Left Turn Signal - 2002 TJ

On my 2002 Wrangler SE the left turn signal has developed a new "feature." Starting a week ago, when I activate the left turn signal after the Jeep sat for a period the left green dash panel indicator arrow flashes fast for a couple of seconds (like when a bulb is burned out), but then it slows back to normal. The actual front left side amber marker and the front left turn signal outside blinked fast as well for a couple of seconds and then returned to a "normal" blink rate. The right turn signal works normally and does not start in the "fast" mode.

I also noticed that if I retry the left turn signal immediately again a 2nd and 3rd time the signals blink at a normal pace. However, if the Jeep sits for a while and then I start it, the left turn signal again blinks fast before slowing to a normal rate.

Is this possibly a flasher relay issue? I'm not sure if there are two separate tur signal flasher relays (possibly in the same metal container) since the right side seems OK.

If it is a flasher relay, where is it typically located on the 2002 Wrangler?

Thanks in advance.

Check the fuse box on the passenger side of your engine compartment. Could also possibly be the multi-function lever going bad itself.

Mine does that also when it sits. It usually is corrosion on the bulb in the tail light.. I just clean it and it is fine.. Easy fix if that is the problem..

Thanks -- I'll give that a try. In the past the bulbs just usually burn out, but this one seems quirky. It's almost like it needs to warm up for 2 seconds before it acts normal.

X2...They will bink faster with higher resistance which is what corrosian causes. Once it kind of burns through the connection is better. Clean 'em.

Found the problem! Thanks to all. The "slow/fast" turn signal issue on my 2002 TJ was caused by water. When I took the front left turn signal assembly out, it had a fair amount of water in it. I'm guessing that when I ran it through the car wash recently (I usually wash it by hand) the water jets forced water inside the light assembly, creating the unusual behavior. After drying everything, I applied a thin bead of silicon rubber around the outside rim of the light assembly to provide a water tight seal. Thanks again for the suggestions.
