Question Final questions... Please help!

Hey guys,

So i went and checked out this jeep.....

Details of Used 1999 Jeep Wrangler, Leonia, NJ - Yahoo! Autos

I took my father with me who knows a thing or two about cars. We were able to talk the guy down to 4200 for the wrangler. I do, however have a couple of concerns.

The soft top will def need to be replaced at some point. A couple tears in it, probably expected for a ten year old wrangler. My biggest concern is a couple of rust spots.

There is one spot right below the passengers door, probably about the size of a baseball that is cracking. How hard would it be to fix this? There are a couple of small rust spots on other spots like the mirror hinges and things like that that seem to be easily fixable.

My MAIN concern is there is a decent amount of rust on the undercarriage. I thought it was a good amount, however my father didnt think it was that bad at all for a 99 wrangler. What do you guys think?

Other than all of that she is in great shape. I will def paint the guards black when/ if I get her. The engine sounds unreal. I am used to a little 4 cyl ranger right now so driving that 4.0 was amazing.

Thanks guys,

That's a fair price for that jeep, you could probably find a Jeep with a newer top and less rust for $1,000-$1,500 more. The spot under the door is a very common place for the TJs to rust. The hinges rust easily to, those can be cleaned up and repainted. The paint on the mirrors usually chips off, but those can be cleaned up and repainted also. The cost of fixing the rust under the passenger door depends on the body shops near you, it wouldn't hurt to call a few of them and get a quote.

Fixing the rusted body spot will require a lot of work from what I have heard. Other than that it is a great looking TJ. Research repairing body rust and see what it entails and then decide off that. You said theres rust on the frame also?

It's NY, your going to have surface rust on your frame, surface rust is fine, a rust hole on the frame is no good at all.

The best thing to do is pull it into a garage and scrape all of the rust off of the frame and coat it with POR-15 or another rust prevention paint. I live in Michigan, and if someone here has a frame with no rust on it, they either just bought it, or they just painted it.

The spot under the door will need to be cut out and new metal will need to be put in. If you wanted to just hide it you could buy some frame sliders.

I don't think your going to get much better of a Jeep for that price, if you do have a larger budget you could find a jeep with a perfect body in that area for around $5,500-6,500

I personally didn't want to deal with paint and body work so I spent the extra money and paid $6,700 for a black 2001 4.0, automatic, with a hard top and a soft top and 31" BF Goodrich All-Terrains.

That's $2,500 more than the one your looking at, if your budget allows for it, and it's worth the extra money to you, keep looking. As long as that jeep is mechanicly sound, then it's a good price.

Guys,

It turns out the body rust spot is not under the passenger door, its on the door. Did this just become a larger problem then I originally thought???

if you feel like driving to nny i can find quite a few tjs here for that same price or under.

theres one in comparable condition here, green-tan soft top with same amount of rust for 3 grand obo.

i payed 3500 for my 97 with a brand new best top, perfect interior, new paint, new radiator, undersprayed, inside sprayed, and 30x9.5s

you gotta let the deal come to you bro. i spend about 3 months waiting for a tj and got lucky with mine.

dont buy something you dont want to live with. instead of spending your cash on rust repair get something nicer and spend your cash on tires or a lift

what is your exact city in ct and ill do some digging for you online. id hate to see you overpay at a dealer and not know much about the jeep... better to save money and buy from an individual and get some history
