X2 on the Mobil-1 ATF, the TC will shift much smoother into 4lo, as for synthetic into the axles, mixed on that, I switched to Mobil-1 on my 98XJ when it had about 60,000mi on it with no problems, when the auburn went into the 8.25 the auburn manual said 'No Synthetics' so I went with drydene 75-90 and friction modifier. That was in 2001.
If you have ANY seepage on the axle end seals the synthetic will get thru it even more, so if you do go syn keep an eye on the end seals for a while.
The new lockers and LSD's now say it's OK for synthetics and thats whats in the D35 on my ZJ which I just had totally rebuilt with new gears and a LSD last month, it does run cooler by feeling it with my hand. That was also true of the 231 transfer case, after 60 miles of interstate driving the the TC was hot to the touch, uncomfortable hot I might add. After driving 60 miles to the inlaws I changed the TC fluids while I was there, when we got back home I did the same touch test and the TC was much cooler, barely warm, big change IMO. It also had a slight seep on the output shaft, after about 10K that seep went away and the TC has kept all it's fluids after dumping about 2 pints during that 10K when I first changed it.
