Flywheel got resurfased

The shop that rebuilt my transmission and transfer case had the flywheel resurfaced. Guess what happened.

They put it all back together and it wouldn't move. Just shudder

They called to tell me of the problem and I asked about the flywheel he said that was not the issue. Now they are putting in a new flywheel and another clutch.

I specifically told them not to resurface it and they did it anyway "because it needed it" This is going to get interesting. Last time I use them for anything.

At least they aren't trying to make you pay for a new clutch!

He said they removed.008. That doesn't sound like that would be enough to make it not engage at all. Anyone ever heard of this happening before. The Jeep had 120k pn it when I purchased it so it's possible it has been done before.

I had mine resurfaced a few years ago when I did the first clutch on my jeep. Never new that it wasn't supposed to be done until I found out afterwards. I haven't had any real problems though. Now and then I get a little shudder from a stand still when the jeep is cold.

I imagine they removed more than .008. .008 isn't much more than the thickness of a sheet of paper. Now if they removed .080 you'll have clutch release issues.

Something is not adding up. The clutch was fine before I pulled it into the shop, I had it replaced because the tranny was out. The guy that runs the shop is a major gearhead and he has done other projects for me with no problems.

That's what I'm thinking too, someone read their measurements wrong.

When I replaced my clutch I resurfaced the flywheel and haven't had any issues. That was 7k miles ago

I just got off the phone again. The Dealership confirmed to the repair shop that the flywheel is not serviceable. So I'm getting all new guts, it should be done when I fly home on Friday. The boss was out of town when the flywheel was resurfaced and he did not notify the tech of my information on the flywheel. I'm all better now.

I have surfaced a lot of them over the past 25 years and have never heard of a problem out of them.
And I'm sure they didn't take 80 off of it. If they had to grind that much off to clean it up, it wasn't working before.

Wow, if you have done a lot of em I'm a bit surprised. I've had nothing but manual transmissions in all of my vehicles dating back to 1970 and all had well over 100k miles on them, only ever had to replace clutches 3 times, and never resurfaced any of the flywheels. Why mill it down when the designers say not to? I'm no rocket scientist, but I do know that once a piece of steel is milled down it looses not only the original mating shape, but also becomes less tolerant of heat.. Then again, if one uses the clutch properly it should never get hot.. The last clutch I replaced was because of a broken PP spring.. I just don't get how clutches are failing as often as they do ? I must be missing something...

Sounds like maybe the shop put the throwout/pilot bearing in backwards, or used the wrong one? I've heard of that happening; causes the clutch disk to bind up on the shaft before fully engaging the flywheel.

The thing about resurfacing is that the factory puts a VERY slight "dome" on the flywheel. This lets the center section engage a hair before the outer section, which helps with alignment and to prevent shuddering at takeoff. Losing the dome can make it shudder/chatter a bit right at the engagement zone, but won't prevent it from engaging at all.

I my self isn't doing anything wrong. But collecting 30-80 bucks every time I surface a flywheel

All I know is the clutch was working fine when I dropped it off. After the resurfacing it didn't. Everything will be new now at no cost to me so no more worries.

Resurfacing the flywheel wasn't recommended but that's definitely not what is causing your problem.
