Found out how long a original soft top will last :)

I bought the Jeep 3 years ago, and it had the original 2001 black softtop on it, well I guess ten years is the max limit for a top, I found a tear starting in a seam line to day above the drivers side door, is ten years good or really excellent for a softtop? To me ten years seems really excellent. I've had vehicles that don't last that long LOL.

Sounds like a good value in time for the top. I've never had one last that long, not because of aging, but because of thieves and vandalism. Now that I live in a better area I hope not to have that problem again.

What are you going to replace it with?

I'm replacing it with a best Top Black denim replace a top from Morris 4X4. i figure they are factory quality and if this one lasted 10 years why put out the money for a sailcloth at $536 when I can get the factory one for $364, My hardware is in great shape, no bends rust or stripped out bolts, but I think I'll replace that anyway just in case

I think 10 years is pretty good for a soft top, depending on where you live etc...
The weather, road salt, factory spew, etc. can cause some serious rot/damage on soft tops (Or even the vehicle itself).

As long as the hardware is still good, I totally suggest a sailcloth replacement. It made a WORLD of difference when i replaced my yj's with one. no more highway "flappy flappy" annoyances!

My 2001's top is still going strong. no signs of any bad wear. the back windows are a bit faded along with the read window but really nothing to bad. 9 years going on 10. not bad.

I can't remember how long my factory top lasted, I want to say 7 or 8 years. And I live on the coast too. I'm on the third replacement top now and it's a 97. The first one we bought was a pavement ends and that one lasted not even two years. After that was a bestop RAT and this new one is the same. They are great. I'm pretty hard on the top though, not that I don't take care of it or anything but the windows are in/out pretty much everyday and it was a zipper that broke on the old replace a top. Ten years for the factory one sounds good though.

You know those stupid commercials where they try to get you to spit out your gum and buy a new piece?

I'm relating.

I think you guys have already gotten me a few times, but it's always been with a knife...

Btw, how hard is it to replace the upper windows if the frames are good but someone was nice enough to slash both for sport? I hate vandals...

But Tiny in Lederhosen....

That was more the innocent "I'm married, I'm new here, I'd like to be able to stay here" expression.

Yes, I know. It wasn't just the zipper that was ripped now that I'm thinking about it. It was also ripped above the driver side door where the plastic piece is. And maybe even somewhere else, I can't remember exactly. Anyway we did take it to an shop that fixes softops and we got a quote of $100. So instead of spending the money to have it fixed we decided to get a whole new set up.

Well, I don't blame you, I didn't mean to sound snippy, just wanted to let you know that lots of times they are repairable.

My top has seen better days, its from 02 and it is ripping just like yours, where the flaps above the doors meet. The windows are tinted and really beat up, I can barely see out the rear. I'm trying to get it through this winter then I'll spring for a new one. I figured it's one less winter on the new soft top

Soft top > hard top all day

I bought my top off of an 04 wreck in the bone yard, so for 6 years the top is still in good shape.

My wife sewed out neighbors zipper back in from one end to the other, so if I ever need one I just get it and hand it to her

I have a 99 and the top is still good. It is worn and there are some stress rips but nothing that goes all the way through.

Mine is still in ok shape, the windows show their age, but the sippers are still working, I wax them once a month, the rip in eth top isn't all the way through yet and theirs one tiny little pin hole that's filled with mighty mend it ( believe it or not that crap actually worked). But I want to change eth top before I end up rolling down eth street with duct tape holding it together like some Jeeps I see cause I really hate water coming in worse than anything
