Front Drive Shaft?

Should my front drive shaft be rotating when I am not in 4 wheel drive? My XJ did not turn unless it was in 4 wheel drive. After a huge snowstorm this week I am now getting a squeeking sound from somewhere between the transfer case and the front axle. I am figuring a u-joint, but any ideas to check beyond that I would be appreciated.

Yes it always spins, sounds like a u-joint

Yes, the driveshaft will spin. It just isn't "driven" until you engage 4WD.

Yep, the front driveshaft is rotated by the front axle in 2wd since the front axle shafts are connected directly to the ring gear via the differential. In 4x4, it is driven by the transfer case. This is exactly how later XJ's front axles and driveshafts worked too. Early XJs had a passenger-side vacuum operated disconnect for the passenger-side axle shaft that could conceivably allow the front driveshaft to not spin in 2wd.

Do a search on "angry sparrows" for your squeeking sound. I had the same issue a few months back after deep water and mud fun. Had to take out the front drive shaft and rebuilt the double cardan joint which is the double u-joint near the tansfer case. Do it before it completely fails in a bad way.

I did the search and now have another question. Will I need this ball centering kit also besides the two u-joints? I see Napa has a kit for $65. That seems a little steep. Any other place cheaper. I just don't want to rip it apart to find out I do not have the correct parts to put it back together.
