Front drive shaft play

There is play in my front drive shaft slip yoke. Can it be fixed, possibly buy just that part by itself?

Yes, it can be fixed, you can take it to a shop that repairs drive shafts and have them look at it. You can also buy a new one and replace it if you want. Which ever is best for you.

What type of play? Do you mean the yoke is loose on the pinion shaft or that the u-joints are loose where they are bolted into the yoke?

Or do you mean the pinion shaft has rotational play when you twist it via the yoke?

I went to have the drive shaft looked at, and it was going to be 250 to repair it... Apparently there was significant wear on the rubber coating and the yoke teeth on both the female and male ends. This was causing the vibration. (Since I've had the driveshaft off, it rides like a dream...) So I'll just save another 300 on top of the cost to repair it and buy one that I want, hopefully it will last for a while. Thanks for all the input everyone.

I have the same problem Jerry... Play in the front drive shaft, so I took it off and was going to rebuild it last weekend. I couldnt find play or damage to u joints or centering ball when I did. All seemed tight. When I put it back on, it was obvious the play was at the joint/splines where the yoke and shaft meet. Dont know if this can be fixed with a longer yoke, or need new shaft. I dont see any damage..

I know he didnt let you answer, but if you have time I would like to hear it.. Mine is loose at the yoke and pinion shaft. Also when I took it apart it looked like one of the splines on the yoke end was double keyed, but the splines on the shaft were all the same. the factory boot and clams still on with no sign of damage. Im assuming this is normal, but I thought the other side would be keyed to this.

There are small shops that do nothing but driveshaft repairs which I use if it's not just a bad u-joint. I would just take the shaft into one of them & let them figure it out. Such shops are usually inexpensive, just make sure it's a true driveshaft shop and not just a general purpose garage. Garages normally just ship driveshaft repair jobs out to driveshaft shops & then mark up the cost.
