Front driveshaft angle way off

Alright so I had to take apart everything required to change out the transfer case. And I put it all back together and I notice the back of the front driveshaft is angled wierd. The part coming out of the transfer is angled up somewhat. It looks as if the u-joints are above both parts of the driveshaft causing them to be angled down. Hard to explain what Im talking about with a picture or better description.

What year and model Jeep? '97 and newer Wranglers have a CV joint (constant velocity... two u-joints) at the top of the driveshaft where it is bolted to the t-case output shaft.

Its a 97 Wrangler. I know they have cv joint. Thats the part Im talking about. Maybe its supposed to look like it does, But it looks odd. And Im not trying to have my transfer case ripped apart again. Its like the output shaft is pointed upwards then cv joint is there then the driveshaft point downward to the front

Does it bind when you turn it? Do you get vibrations on the road? If neither of these, then that's what it is supposed to look like. Otherwise, check your transmission/tcase mounts.

Alright so I finally got my jeep started seeing as how I had a dead battery and after messing with the 4wd linkage I finally got it to move. But as its moving I can hear a clunking noise and a strong vibration coming from underneath. I still think it has somethign to do with the front driveshaft but Im not sure.

Did you take apart the TCase that you bought from Clifford? Because I know he wouldn't send you anything that was hosed up.

Also take your front Dshaft out and visually look at it to see if anything looks out of place. Unless you want to take a picture for us first to see what it looks like up in there so we can take a look for you.

No I never took it apart. I just put it in and put everything back they way I though it would go. But Ill take it out and take a picture of it tomorrow. I really dont know what I would be looking for if something were wrong with it. I think there might also be some damage to the trans when the transfer case ripped apart but Im not sure

if you can take a picture of it how it is in there now. If you can take the pan down and show us what you are talking about we can come up with some answers for you.

Is your transfer case clocked the same as it was origanally? If it is clocked differently, this will effect the front drive shaft and not the back one. Just a thought.

this is a good idea. Take some good pictures so we can see what is going on. Did you cycle the engine and transmission before you installed the tcase?? I know for a fact there is nothing wrong with that tcase. Else I wouldn't have sold it to you

I just meant did you fire the engine up and run through the tranny gears to make sure there was nothing wrong with it first. The AX5 isn't very reliable transmission. Pull the front drive shaft and the rear drive shaft and run through the gears to see if the noise is still there. If it is gone hook up your rear dshaft and do the same thing.

Fapple has a very good point that I didn't think of. When you put your TCase in did you make sure to put it in the same as what you took out? If you clocked it to where the front output shaft is higher than it was before then it would definitely cause what you are describing.

I think I did screw up the transmission. Because while sitting still and have it running. I can switch into gears and take foot off gas pedal without using clutch and it still runs. I dont know if its the clutch gone or the inside of the trans is all torn apart.

I'm with cliff, isolate the noise first by removing driveshafts, if noises go away you may have broken a rear, if noise still there it would be in the transmission, transfer case or clutch, no matter where it is you still gotta pull a driveshaft off to fix it.

Found out what the problem was. I got my rear driveshaft in, So I decided to take out the front one because I figured thats what was making the clunking and vibration. Well I was moving it around while it was still connected and it moved a lot more than normal. So I took it out and realized at the "double cordon"(not sure thats what its called or not) where the 2 u-joints are near the transfer and it wiggled around freely. Im guessing the u-joints blew out and thats what caused the transfer to rip apart at highway speeds. So now the question is......Can I replace the u-joints and put it back on or do I need to replace the driveshaft?

Get the CV joint rebuilt with a new centering joint and new u-joints and it'll be good as new. No need for an entirely new driveshaft. Any driveshaft shop (look in the Yellow Pages in the Automotive repair section) can take care of it for not a lot of $$$.

I agree with Jerry. Make sure they triple check your driveshaft for cracks or splits. I've seen the driveshaft split around the centering ball from that kind of blow out.

Also make sure they spin balance it when they rebuild the cv. With the kind of violent actions yours must've been going thru, I'm sure it out of balance. However keep in mind it will be well over a hundred bucks to have this done. Just the spicer parts alone for the job are about 100 bucks.
