Been a long time member on the yj side of the forum. My wife and I got another jeep for her this past winter. Since we have had it, it has made a loud clank sound when you put the jeep in drive or reverse. No other time does it make this noise. It looked like the drive shaft was turning while she had her foot on the brake and switched from drive to reverse. Now I thought it might have been back lash, or possible a loose pinion gear. Took the rear diff apart and it is perfect. No damage. A friend said it might be the tranny. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. It is a 99 tj, 35s, ri 4 lift, rear automatic locker. It is a 4.0, automatic. Thats a bout all I know of the jeep as it was bought with all the goodies.
Thank you for the reply. Yes I changed all rear u joints, as well as the centering joint that is in the drive shaft. The drive shaft is rock solid. When I had the drive shaft disconnected I could turn pinion a little bit before the axles started turning. The ring gear turned immediately. It does have what I think is an Eaton automatic locker. That is where I thought the play was at. Not sure as that was all in perfect condition.
Is it an automatic locker or a selectable locker? An automatic locker like my detroit (made be eaton) will have some clunk in the driveline caused by backlash. This is normal for a detroit. no need to worry about it as long as your backlash is within tolerance. It will also pop occasionally when it unloads. its just the locker saying hello
Also make sure all the motor mount to engine block bolts are still there and tight as they have a tendency to loosen and or sheer off the heads
