Fuel Gauge Problem

Hey guys. I'm new here, just joined 10 minutes ago actually.

I just purchased a 98 Sahara one month ago.

Here's my problem. My gas gauge will not go down to E (empty). It stops at 1/4 tank until I run out. I have put some fuel cleaner in the tank hoping it will unstick the float. When I fill, it will fill way past F, and seems to work normally until it reaches 1/4 tank, then stops there. I'm assuming float/sending unit is bad, which means replacement. Is that was you guys think?

Thanks.
Greg

Welcome to the site.
My YJ does the same thing, but at 1/8 tank. I read somewhere its a common problem and it was a recall from Jeep or something like that. Not exactly sure...

Yeah, I just know not to run it too low on gas and its alright. Does kinda suck though. Seems like for me full is 1/8 over F and empty is 1/8 over E. Weird.

yeah I'm a 1/4 in both directions. Funny thing is...one time and one time only....when I was near empty and parked at a place to eat, when I cam out and fired the Jeep up, it read empty, but that was the only time I've seen it below the 1/4 tank mark since I got it.

That's weird. My gas guage moves around a hell of a lot when I'm driving, too. Look down, "Damn I need gas", look back a second later and you have 3/8 tank, not 1/8. But I haven't been able to drive my Jeep for over a month, and its my only ride. Its in the shop and hopefully I get it back tomorrow with a new locker and better axleshafts. Then maybe I won't break something else for a while...I'm not counting on it though.

if it goes way pass F, it would have something to do with your guage not the float. may nee a new one or the calibration is off. i would imagine it would be a recall.. check with the dealer
