Fuel Pump issues 99'

hey guys just trying to see if anyone can shed some light on this problem i've been having. Takes 1 or 2 cycles to fire up the jeep (99 sport auto 4.0L 6cyl) and occasionally on idle I'll get a tough vibration and the jeep will stall which i thought was oddly strange for an auto but after stalling it fires right back up. Then recently on a road trip from FL back home to RI I couldn't get her to accelerate over 40 for some reason. I'm thinking it's time for a new fuel pump?

Borrow/rent a fuel pressure gauge from your local auto parts store and see what fuel pressure you have at the Schraeder valve (it's a pressure test port) on the fuel rail, it should be at or very close to 49 psi. The Schaeder valve has a black plastic screw on cover over it, it's like an oversize tire stem valve. The fuel rail is near the top of the engine, it's what the fuel injectors are inserted into.

Okay and if it's not near that psi what should my next step be?

The usual cause of low pressure is a bad fuel pump. It could also conceivably be the fuel pressure regulator. Over the years I stopped trying to figure out which was causing various problems since either can cause some problems so I now replace them both together.

This picture shows both which can be purchased as an assembly. The little round can on top is the fuel pressure regulator.

Go for a Mopar or Bosch and avoid the cheap store brands or those from Airtex or Spectra, they don't have a good track record. I just replaced my less than 3 year old Spectra with a Bosch.

I think I will be changing my fuel pump soon too. Any links to a DIY page on how to change it myself?
