Question fuel sending unit or float problem?

First let me say I love this forum! It's nice to see people with the same interest help one another.

my 99 tj seems to have a gremlin in the fuel tank. I get different readings when fueling up. sometimes says I have a full tank and others when I turn the key it goes past full and then comes back to around 7/8 or so. I've been told its my sending unit, if so wouldn't this affect performance?

The sending unit in question has nothing to do with performace all it does is tell the gauge on the dash how much fuel is in the tank. Floats don't really go bad very often not much to them but you can take it out (since you have to get to the sending unit anyway) and check it, if anything is wrong with it it would prob show empty all the time cuz it has fallin off.

good luck

Seems to be a problem in those years. Levinoss has a similar problem that we are going to take care of soon. They are not that hard to replace, just remember to NOT fill up the tank before doing it.

Also, if I'm gonna drop the tank for the sending unit, my next question is how does the fuel pump hold up on tjs? mine has 87K on the ticker and I'm the second owner (bought it off a lot so I don't know how the p.o. treated it). I'm a believer in if it ain't broke don't fix it, but while I have the tank down should I maybe put in a new pump?

If you have the money I would replace it with a quality pump while you are in there. I also believe in if it ain't broke don't fix it but the years I turn wrenches taught me that murphy will attack a few miles down the road if you don't replace it while in there.

Fuel sending unit, filter and pump are all 1 part... $300. Check with your dealer. you may have a recall on that part like me. let teh dealer pay for it if you can.

I appreciate the info, I saw a link once where you could enter your vin# and check for recalls. Does anyone have a link?
