Funny Smell?

I know this is a shot in the dark, for the past couple of times I've driven my 97 Sahara I Have noticed this really weird Smell. I know what burning engine oil, gear and differential fluid smell like and it's not it? Looked under my jeep and the only thing that is leaking is my rear main, which I have known for sometime, and a very very small leak in the power steering box. Just wondering if anybody has had any similar smells? Almost "Chemically" smelling. Also noticed on rare occasions at 2-3 K RPM it sputtered? Wondering if the smell could be from a clogged Cat? Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it smell like a burning fart after a night of cheap beer and and crabcakes? It may be the cat....

Check the top of the cat to see if there is a dead animal on top of it cooking.

The Manifold has already been replaced and has a small exhaust leak, I think I'll just slap another cat and exhaust on and see if that does the trick, Needs to be done anyways.Yeah some very interesting Verbiage in this thread huh?

Since there are no dead cats to be seen, is it possible you are smelling the radiator. If there is any antifreeze leaking out when hot it can give off the chemical smell you may be talking about.

I have a strange odor in my jeep as well, it is a propane/methane smell.

I found this online

Jeep Creep November 2006: Off-Road.com

If you do a control+F search for propane you can find some information buried in that blog.

Not sure if those are the solutions but it's where I'm going to look first (at least after I check for that cat).

The way the exhaust pipe is set up in Jeeps occasionally the exhaust will creep into the cab especially if you have the rear window opened. A very common smell that will blow in will be your cat burning off un-ignited fuel. It will smell anywhere from an ammonia scent to a slight oil burning scent depending on the age of the cat and the type of fuel your running. DUB when does your smell appear to be worse? Is it in transit while the Jeep is moving and if so does it happen under load or at regular traveling speeds?

I thought the mud and grass heating up on my exhaust after a good day of mudding was smelling pretty bad. The stagnant water smell sucks...

Did you go through anything?
Over any dirt roads that were just oiled?
Fresh Tar?
Could be road sealent???

See if anything sprayed up into a wheel well.

My 98 TJ has an odd odor as well. Not a petroleum smell. It smells like witch hazel. Mostly I'm just happy when it's not in the shop. I hope you find the source of your smell.

Could be coolant. It has a somewhat sweet chemical smell.
If you are using any synthetic fluids, they have a different smell than the petroleum based products.

yo, i dont know how old this thread is, but ive been searching about this problem to, so here it is. my jeep will sputter for like a minute after like a minute of driving then not do it again until it cools down. and when it gets warmed up its fine right. until i put it in a gear and go up to about 3k to 4k rpm then i get that weird smell, mostly in third. I pulled a boat for the first time in my jeep and starting off from a stop light the smell made me want to puke. so i dont know if these two are related or not. do you think a diagnostic will check to see what this is. im with yall in thinking its a clogged cat.

Not unless your diagnostic tool includes a bionic nose attachment

I bet its a bad cat converter/o2 sensor

Question Chemical smell - me too! HELP!

I have the same "chemical" smell in my 2004 Unlimited. I'm not sure what it is, I've had to replace my catalytic converter, so I'm hoping it's not that! I was leaning towards "sour" antifreeze but there was not strong odor. Any other ideas? The smell if very strong. Should I test the catalytic converter?
