Gas Gauge messing up?

Hey guys and gal's ... Today I was on Empty, I mean, the light was on and I was sippin fumes ... I put 10 bucks in the tank at 2.69 a gallon and only got about 1/4 tank ... does that sound right ... I usually get more than that. Plus, when I started back up it still read empty for about 20 yards then it slowly moved up, the light was off, but it wasnt showing any gas at all.

Depending on how big your tank is, I have read people saying that the gas light can come on with as much as 3 gallons left in your tank. If you were really REALLY low, putting in less than 4 gallons would put you at a little less than 1/4 of a tank.

Well, at $2.50, $10 will get you 4 gallons, so yeah. Less than 4 gallons would be less than one fourth of a 19 gallon tank, not sure if you have a 15 or 19 gallon tank, but in either case it would be accurate.

Is this a new Jeep for you or did the gauge just suddenly start acting differently?

Regarding the tank size, Wrangler TJs come with both 15 gallon and 19 gallon tanks. It takes a pretty stripped down TJ for it to have come from the factory with the 15 gallon tank though.

It took so long to register because the jeeps have a fuel tank buffer on them, that way when you speed up or slow down, you don't see the fluctuations in fuel.

That makes sense deathphoenix ... I'm going to keep an eye on it because usually it comes up smooth when I get gas and this time it didnt come up at all, then a little, then a little more so it didnt seem to be acting normal like before... I'll fill the tank up tomorrow (Payday) and see how it acts then.

My s10 doesn't have a buffer, so I'll watch my gauge fluctuate while changing speeds or on a hill etc... The 01 TJ has one, and I noticed it took like 20 seconds or more after adding a little over 3 gallons to fully register. The fuel light was on as well, got gas, raised it just under 1/4 tank or right on, then after driving I noticed it was above 1/4, so same thing I think.

I remember riding in my dad's 71 Nova and when he would jam on the gas you could watch the tank empty LOL
