Gas Gauge Problem.

I have recently bought a 2000 wrangler TJ and am wondering if my gas tank gauge is correct.... I was on E the other day and filled it up and it only took about 14 gallons, but my owners manual says its a 19 gallon tank... then i drove only about 40-50 miles highway and was down 1/4 tank. Is my jeep really that bad on gas or is there something else going on?

You might have a bad sending unit in the tank, bad guage, loose wireing, or a bad float. Theres not much in that circuit, pretty basic power in, power out line. So I would start in the tank at the sending unit and float. But thats just me.

i dunno but my gauge needle can get pretty close to the "E" for empty letter and then it will only take about 15 gallons!

when my gas light comes on and i fuel up i get 16 or so gallons give or take a half gallon or so. i have a 2002 so yours is probably pretty close to correct. I only get 14.5 mpg so goin 40-50 miles may bring it to 1/4 tank depending on if u filled the tank all the way and how heavy u are on your gas pedal and what size tires u are running etc

I get about 16 also on E, the tank is a 19 if I remember but the vent tube prevents it from filling up fully. From what I understand Jeep didnt want to reengineer a tank so they used the old cj 19 gallon design, I know this works on a yj to get more fuel in it. The TJ's tube Unfortunately is in the tank, I know some people that have trimmed the tube shorter and gotten up to 18 gallons in it but the gauge will be inaccurate in that case. The gauge will read full alot longer but will still read empty corectly.
