Question Gas hose issue..

So, I need some advice that's very "weird.." At first when putting gas in my gas tank, it seemed to have no problem-flow wise..

The other day I went to fill my gas tank and after the gas started flowing, it kicked the handle out.. I couldn't get more than a couple of dollars and it kicked out again.. Needless to say, it takes "forever" to fill up my jeep..

(2004 Jeep Wrangler, Auto, I-6, 35x12.5x15 and a 3 inch body lift)

I had a friend of mine tell me I needed to buy a longer hose to offset the body lift but I'm not sure what to do.. So, figured I'd talk to the experts...you!! Thank you so much for your advice and suggestions..

I've got an 05, and that happened to me. I had to tilt the nozzle to fill up. I found the happy spot and it worked. The weird part is that after a few times, it stopped doing it. I still have the "splashback syndrome", though. The pump doesn't kick off until after gas shoots out of the tank. From what I've found, it's probably the rollover valve. I'm not about to replace the tank to fix it though. Even if it is a pain to trickle the last 2 gallons in. It seems to happen more in the winter for some reason.

Bought my Jeep in Missouri never had a problem then moved to Alaska and had to only insert the pump part way or it shut off. Had to listen for it to get full or it over flowed. Moved back to Missouri now no problem. Some states seem to have more sensitive shut offs. No fear though. Do like I did in AK and just put the nozzle in partly or there is a fix guys came up with. It's something weird like taking the filler hose off a ford in the junkyard. Don't quote me on that just do some searching and you will find it.

my 98 TJ will not take more than 50 cents at a time unless I have nozzle in about 1/2 to 2/3 way in. Listen when it starts getting full, although I have not had it spew any out. Just the way it is.

Some gas stations have faster flows than others. If the flow is too fast it will come back up and make the pump think the tank is full.

Also im not sure on this but I believe a body lift, especially a 3 inch could cause a kink of the hose that connects the fuel intake thingy (don't know the technical term) to the gas tank. Maybe do a visual inspection of the hose and see if it's kinked even slightly.

If I shove the nozzle all the way in, it kicks off. Put it partly out, no issues (2001 TJ).

Have the same issue with a '99 Hyundai. Had to due with a semi clogged return line. Don't know if its the same problem you have. Somehow the line had gotten a kink in it and wasn't allowing the tank to 'breathe' while it was filling. Good luck!

However I do not think this would be a solution to the OP's problem. I agree that with that much BL the filler hose is probably too short.

Actually, I have the hose somewhere around here. We were packing to move, and... If it ever turns up, I'll try it.

Thanks everyone! Sorry..Been out of town, w/o internet and basically, worn and tired.. I hadn't been able to check the forum for a while but I"m back! I'll do a visual inspection and I'll check out the link as well.. That's the weird thing.. It wasn't doing it after we got the jeep but as time progressed, it started acting up a little, take $12.00 or so before it kicks out; then it kicks off.. It's the weirdest thing but I appreciate all the advice, you guys rock!!

Ok so update on hose issue. Some were exactly right-chevron and my gas tank do not get along. I filled up with Exxon and I had no problem! Go figure. Lol. I'm still going to possibly replace the hose from the body lift to ensure everything is ok. Thanks so much everyone!!

Pull the fuller nozzle out a few inches. It'll stop kicking off.

This is a standard problem with the Jeeps.. I think it happens to almost all of them.

Only with the '03-up. There was a recall on them.The easy fix is to install a GM filler hose with a built in flapper valve.

If I remember correctly, the recall was only for '07 and newer. '03-'06 were left to their own devices or fixes as it may be. If I'm wrong, PLEASE correct me before I order the GM part, spend my money and time, lol. I did, just for giggles, put in a complaint in with NHTSA for safety issue, it being a possible fire hazard and chemical spill.
