Gas Light Question

When the gas light comes on, how many miles approximately do you have until you run out of gas?

I have traveled 50 miles with out running out and wont trust it much more. Not worth waiting 2-3 hours for AAA to find out.

I love this topic ! Nobody knows for sure ! Haha , owners manual is Sketchy at best about what's left in the tank. I get about 40 miles when the light comes on, then it's just HOPE ya make it from there.

If I fill up as soon as the light comes on I can put in 15 gal. Our tanks are 19 gal.

Good call. I think that's about right. The rest is, how heavy are you on the skinny pedal and what tires you're running.

I've deliberately ran mine out of gas twice to find out. both times I got just over 40 miles - that was city driving so no prevailing headwind/tailwind.
But I'm sure individual results will vary.

Just a heads up (on my 97 auto anyway) when I ran out of gas the engine just stopped. No coughing or spluttering - one second it was running, the next, nothing.

Just wondering, have you ever actually put 19 gals in your tank? I've owned my 2003 TJ since new and have never been able to put over 16 in it. And I Know I've came close to running it out of fuel more than once.

I do not think you can run a tank completely dry. The pickup does not touch the bottom.

I usually just go to the gas station as soon as the light comes on, but apparently its like a horror movie for me I don't see a gas station for the next 12 miles or so.

I've put 17.5 gallons in a few times. I've never ran it out. It's not good for the fuel pump.

I have the 22.5 gallon tank, when the light goes on I can top off with almost 18 gallons so I figure 4 gallons left of Petroleum

Unless you have an aftermarket tank... genright makes a 24 gal tank. But it's either a 14 or 19 gal. The smaller tank is harder to find.

Actually it is 15 or 19. Both tanks are 19 gal capacity. The 15 gal tank the vent tube extends further into the tank and the sending unit for the gauge is calibrated differently. You can drop the tank remove the pump unit and reach in and cut the vent back and regain the lost 4 gallons of air space. However if you don't replace the pump unit your fuel gauge won't come off full till the first 80-100 miles you clock after filling up.

Usually have about 4-5 gallons when the light comes on. Knowing I get 17ish mpgs I drive for another day or two. I fill up around 270-280. I run out at 322.

Thats what I was getting at, many of us only have 15-16 of usable fuel so the OP's question of how many gallons or how far you can go once the light comes on is a moot point.
I start heading for a station when I get down to a 1/4 tank.
