I am in serious need of a fuel tank for a 97-02 TJ. This is what happened (it is NOT mine).
That gap is about 2" (maybe a bit more) wide and about 8" long. NOT going to be fixed.
Looks like a previous owner had damaged the tank as the tear is RIGHT where the straps would be if the tank was in normal shape. Even the tank skid looks like one from a later TJ (like an 04-06 - anybody know when they changed the skid?) Looks like they tried to caulk or otherwise seal it closed, but it obviously failed. We dropped this tank last night and found this mess. Looks like the heat of the exhaust melted the caulking/repair. Either way, a new tank is needed. We can reuse the fuel pump and such, but was hoping somebody who may have gone to a fuel cell or something had their OEM tank lying around.
Plan is to replace this as inexpensively as possible and get a proper gas skid on there (kilby, genright, etc). If OEM tank has to be bought new, then that + a skid puts him in the range of something like the genright tank anyway. So to help this college kid keep costs down, I thought I'd see if anybody here had a spare tank.
