There is a round part that has the shift pattern on it, stick a screwdriver between the seam that's on the circumference and pry it out. This will expose a locknut. Loosen up and remove then nut, then twist the knob off. That's all there's to it

I use the search!

I just tried this on my99 and can't get the little circle cap off at all. I gouged the heck out of the knob trying, but no luck. Any ideas? I got a RockNob today that I want to install.

Thanks, bigjeep, but...

Same recomendation - pop the cap. I just can't get it off. Someone else in that thread suggested cutting the thing off. I don't need the threads becuase the RockNob doesn't use them, but I like the length of my shifter now.

Any other ideas for a 99?

well i guess if your not using threads and not using the nob either then you could just be rough with it and jam the screwdriver in there as hard as you can

That actually worked. I found my strap wrench and yanked "like a mug on it" Finally came off! There is apparently a nut or something up inside of it though. Doesn't matter, it's off and the RockNob is on! I'll snap a pic tomorrow in the daylight.

Anyone want a 5 speed stock knob with a few minor gouges in it????

You were supposed to remove a bottom nut first, then unscrew the knob. Anyway, I guess you got it off.

I had a 99, I'm not sure why it is giving you such a hard time but it is a cap with the nut underneath. Use a small screwdriver, #1 or smaller. It can be a tight fit but it will come off.

I changed mine out to a B&M shifter a while back. Mine just unscrewed. Cap i dont think ever would come off. But everything is different i reckon.

There was not a nut of any sort on the bottom below the knob. There is apparently a nut that I can see down inside the OEM knob, now that it is removed. Just for the heck of it, I tried pounding the little cap off from inside out. I put a screwdriver into the hole and pounded it on the table. The cap will not pop off! I talked to the guy I bought it from and he says he never did anything to it. Kind of odd. I guess the point is that I got it off anyway! Still gonna' take that picture, just haven't had a chance. Maybe this weekend........

If you removed the shift knob without removing the cap you should be able to hear the nut rattle when you shake the knob.
