gearbox woes any ideas?

so packed the car this weekend and on the way to the bush, noticed 4th gear would occasionaly grind as I tried to find the gear. this now happens with 2nd and 5th gear. And 2nd sometimes wont engange.

First feels really notchy when revving a bit. 3 however is always fine.

if i double the clutch and shift nice and slow most gears can be selected with minimal grinding.

Any ideas? synchros stuffed? or maybe just low on fluid/ water in gearbox?

97 Tj with a 5speed manual.

Could be a clutch, Clutch master, clutch slave, or syncros. How many miles are on the current clutch? I would check the master and slave first for internal leaks.

as far as i know original clutch, done 95,000 miles on the car.

clutch master reservoir does not look low. I'll check for leaks at the slave tonight.

on a side note, the cap on the reservoir says to use DOT 3 brake fluid, i've got some DOT 4 in the shed, would that do much harm if I added that?

If your clutch master has an internal leak you won't loose fluid.
