Gears.

I have an 06 X 4.0 auto. Dana 35. Factory 3:73. Can I install 4:56 gears without changing the carrier?

I am 90% positive you can. But a re-gear is going to cost you $1200 anyway so another $70-$80 bucks isn't really that much more for a new carrier.

You won't need a new carrier for either axle, your present 3.73 carrier is good for 4.56 in both the D30 and D35 axles.

But for future regearing jobs, don't sweat a new carrier. They are low in cost ($60-80) and have to be removed & reinstalled during a ring & pinion installation anyway so there is no additional labor cost involved in the swap. Given how much the total bill is for regearing both axles, the cost of a new carrier is insignificant.
