Hey,

How do I find out which gears I have.....? I have a 05 X trail rated edition.

I need to know so i know what size tires i can go for. How much does it usually cost to upgrade?

This is what is says on the diff's:

Front:

Dana
40869-1
098-5
REV S
11 0895

Rear:

Dana
4260-1
123-5
REV X
03 02 00

Thanks
jake

is there not a little metal tag on the backside of the diff? might be really dirty and hard to see like mine was. it'll have the gear ratio scribed right on it.

thats how i found mine out. for the rear the tag will be on the side of the diff closest to the bumper. so just look at the tag. look at the top left side column and it will have one number ex. 3
and then a space and 2 more numbers below ex 07

like this

3 #

0 #
7 #

and whatever it is for the rear its the same for the front

Automatic or manual tranny? Auto and you'll be fine. 5 speed, it's kind of iffy (I ran mine like that for a brief time and it's doable but not great on the road). 6 speed and a bit better.

I opted for 4.56's and 33's then stepped up to 35's which is pretty good for what I like. 4.56's and 33's were just about perfect though IMO with a manual tranny.

you should be fine with 33's. i run 3.07's with 32's (six speed) and its fine. do you have the 6 speed? i think the 05's and newer started with the 6 speeds

you have the 4 speed auto.

gears cost quite a bit and you'll have to find a shop to install them too which is another pretty penny. unless you can find a buddy to help put these in. it would probably be pretty difficult if you've never done a gear swap.

if you've got the dana 35 though you could just up get a 8.8 or a 44 that already has new gears.

A complete re-gear will run you between 1000 and 1200 bucks for parts and labor. You can probably shave some dollars off of that if you get the gears yourself, but sometimes that isn't the case. It's a major change to your driveline and provides and excellent benefit with those that have lower gears in the 3.07 range etc.

I personally run 35's with 3.73 on my Auto and I really don't mind it. Decent mileage, and if I need a boost up a hill I just drop it into second and roll around 4k RPM for a minute or to. Doesn't hurt a thing on road and with my 4:1 off road it still crawls very well.
