Gears and Carrier Questions

going home in week and picking up a HP D30 out of my brothers rolled XJ. its a 3.55 carrier, I currently run 3.73's in my 04 TJ

Will the 3.55 carrier be able to house 4.56's and my rear D44 w/ the trac lok, will I be able to continue to run 4.56's w/ the trac lok or will that have to come out?

i'll be mismatched for a little until I can figure this out. thanks for the help in advance

No. You will need a new carrier if you are going from a 3.55's to 4.56 gears in the HP D30. You will also need HP gears which are reverse geared since the pinion is on the high side and not the low side.

In accordance with the manufactures you would need a new carrier as your current carrier is solely for 3.92 and numerically lower gears. 4.56's gears would be out of this range, but you could use D44 "thick" gears which will allow you to use the 3.73 carrier.


Having a mismatch will not matter unless you put the vehicle in 4x4. Then you will have problems.

Thanks for the quick reply and info. Very helpful! Few more questions about the D44...

If I go with the "thick" style is this going to make the factory 3.73 carrier weaker and a potential problem later on?
If I keep the same factory 3.73 carrier the same do I get to keep the trac lok as well?
