Going to pick up a hardtop, what do I need?

My '05 TJ came with soft top, so I don't know the first thing about putting a hard top on it. I found a good deal on the HT, but don't I need a rubber gasket, and mounting hardware. I have to drive about 50 miles to pick it up. I just wanted to drive the Jeep there and put it on, and drive home. Any other suggestions, on how you would go about doing this? I'll start a thread on how to get the defroster/wiper working later

you do need the hardware, just nuts and bolts, i assume its similar to yj. don't drive it without bolting it down, i saw a guy launch a hardtop off a cj going down the road, it was kinda cool, took off like a kite.

It should have a couple of aluminum rails that hold the hard top to the sides, 8 bolts with rectangular nuts that go under the rails, you will need to remove your surrounds that come with the half doors. Depending on where you live you might want to remove the top from yours before you leave including the surrounds. I'm not sure how it attaches in the front though, the YJ uses bolts to the top of the windshield, I just can't remember how one we borrowed attached in the front, hopefully someone here will chime in further.

6 bolts on rear, 2 flip latches in front, make sure you're getting a top of an 03 or newer,
my buddy and i can have the top of in under 3 minutes, 2:45 actually
we made a race out of it. we start time when we pull to a stop, time stops when top is off/stored and we are back in the heep moving again,
I figure the only way faster is going to be with an impact to remove the 6 T-40 torx bolts,, but than you still have to catch those flat nuts on the back.
doors add another minute. 15 seconds to have the doors off/stored, 30-45 seconds to pull fuse/install mirror to door hinge.
now if it only went back together that fast in a rain storm.

just some of the standard nuts and bolts, but you can just pick up some generic hardware from home depot as long as it fits in the rail holes. As stated above, there are only 6 bolts and the 2 header latches. Remove your entire ST, hardware, and surrounds before you get there.

Isn't there supposed to be a rubber strip between body and top?

I think there might be some kind of foam tape gasket thing. Mine was fixed to the hard top side, you won't want to put it on the jeep. Some similar tape from HD will work fine as long as it's not too wide or it will show.

Do I really have to take the soft top off? Can't I just put it down? All I'm going to do is drive home and take the hard top off, and store it 'til winter. If I have to I will.

You may get it to fit, they do ship dual tops with the soft top already there.

My rig had the top cloth installed but folded back with the hard top on when i bought it however i dont have door surrounds nor windows so..

I dont know how the soft top windows are connected on to the body of the jeep however the door surrounds will have to be removed as the hard top has its own "surrounds".

You dont' HAVE to, but it's kind of a PITA to remove all windows, and then try to cram the ST down to get it completely out of the way. It's actually easier to just pull the 4 little screws where the bows mount to roll bar, unhook the windows from the belt-rail, and remove the whole thing, windows and all. Then right back on when you get home.
