I'm looking for replacement wheel nuts for my TJ, and what I'm after are solid steel nuts instead of the typical cheap ones with a pressed-on stamped steel cover. Quadratec has American Racing p/n 91188XL and these LOOK like they're solid, but I was hoping to find black chrome. The 23-piece Quadratec spline-drive set comes in black chrome, but I'm not sure if they're solid. Does anyone use either of these? Or, what do you use for SOLID wheel nuts?
I was on the same search you are, last year.
I'm pretty sure gorilla makes the lugs your after. They're on quadratec too, but the black ones are pretty pricey if I'm not mistaken.
I found lugs at my local napa that fit the bill. They're made by Excalibur, and only come in Chrome from what i know. They've worked great so far. A little rust on them but that's typical for lugs around here in NW PA.
Check out Gorilla brand. I just got solid chrome due to the same issue you are having. The reviews weren't great - they apparently start to rust. Some say it's because if impact wrenching on them. Mine survived a NE Ohio winter fine. We'll see. . . Just not a lot of options out there.
The gorilla black ones are would and fit the factory lug wrench
Stock have that cheesy thin builder plate on surface
Quadratec does carry special gorilla sets with 5 ( one each wheel plus spare) all using a special Keyed adapter plus 18 regular (4 each wheel plus two for spare) but unless you want that matched keyed set you can also get black gorilla on amazon
Mainly because I pull the wheels off to clean & inspect the brakes during every after-trip cleaning, and painted ones would look like crap from removal & installation.
Lug nuts can't be kept pristine without touching them up whether they're black anodized or painted. I personally would not be so concerned with lug nuts on a Jeep that goes offroad.
That might be true. Problem is, 15 ft/lbs is not enough to keep the wheels on. And the OE nuts are only going to survive a certain number of on/off cycles at the specified torque before fatigue failure occurs.
I had a set of Gorilla lugs on my Jeep and they are rusting badly now after only a winter. I'm going to try McGard next time as they have great service (Gorilla doesn't even answer theirs!)
Bought a set of replacements from NAPA last summer, they need replaced as the chrome has rusted pretty bad already. Very disappointed.
