Installing ARB's and need a good spot for the switches for the lockers and compressor. I've seen the vent/switches from Daystar, not sure if I like them or not. Anybody have a good spot or anything custom to mount switches? Please include a pic if can of your switch locations. Thanks.
I made a custom switch panel for mine that's pretty involved, but before I did that, I was thinking about mounting mine on the front of the console facing forward. You couldn't really see them there, but it seems like it would be handy when wheeling.
Okay, so the spot where you have the 4 factory switches, above the cigarette lighter. Can those switches be used for the compressor and lockers? Can I get new covers for the switches or do I have to get all new switches with the correct sign on them? If so, where would I get them? Thanks for the info
yes I do Sinister, I want to put my winch control switch in that spot and the air locker switches in the factory locations to keep things clean looking on the dash.
Well made, illuminated switches, and way cheaper than any other switch boxes. Mounted it with industrial strength velcro from Walmart so that I could move it if need be. I'll take a few pictures and post them later.
I used the factory switch location for my ARB switches. Simply filing the edges (just barely) will allow the switches to fit. They are snug and are not coming out.
When I get a winch the in-cab controls will go on the panel below the steering wheel.
This is what the PO did on my Jeep, but instead of using the 3rd or 4th spot for the compressor switch he drilled a hole in the panel under the steering column. :banghead: Also he shaved a bit of the top of the switch off for clearance, not a big deal but your application is much cleaner.
Forgive me if a simple two-position toggle switch won't work work in your application(s), but I mounted one in the factory switch location near the cigarette lighter. I have an SE (bare bones TJ, so nothing but blanks in those switch positions), and mounted a switch-guarded toggle to control my LED lights. I was an aircraft maintainer in the Air Force, and always thought it would be neat to have an airplane switch in my Jeep. Found myself a USGI toggle and red switch guard, and it fit just fine. I needed to hollow out the back of the switch blank and drill a hole to mount the toggle, but it worked out well.
I like that Waterdog, looks very nice. I would like to do something like that, but I lack the patience for something like that at this point. I'm thinking I want to go this route, I like how clean it is. I'm assuming this style of switches will work for my ARB compressor and ARB rear locker. Thanks for the responses guys.
The arb locker switches are just simple single pole switches that turn the air solenoids on or off, so you could use just about anything there. If you install a switch for the compressor, that will have to be run through a relay, so you can use anything you wanted to use as a switch there also.
I had one custom made by 12Vunlimited. I bought the fuse box with relays off eBay and mounted it on the empty ABS tray. This makes adding accessories easy since it's all pre wired. It also keeps things clean under the hood since you only have to run one positive wire to the battery and can ground it on the abs tray. The panel doesn't come pre wired so you will have to do that yourself. I bought all the wire and connectors off amazon for fairly cheap.
Do you have any other pics of the switch panel installation?
What does it bolt to?
Do you bolt/screw in those side support panels then bolt/screw the face to the panels? Is that center part of the dash left in place for the install or is it removed?
If you have a pet that you like to have with you when you go wheeling then I don't recommend any switch that your pet can energize or de-energize; inadvertently (accidentally). the results could be catastrophic.
The only pet that I take wheelin is my 6 year old daughter....but she gets strapped in the back seat and threatened with severe tickle torture if she touches anything she isn't supposed to.
That clock was one of the few with the look I wanted that was 12 hour. Though eBay had plenty of other options if you don't need to have the old fashioned red LED.
As far as being water proof, it is good enough for me. You could easily pot the back with epoxy if you wanted to.
