So I was going to a buddies cabin and went into a puddle didn't find out until I was stuck that it was deep tried to get out stayed on gas didn't let up but to no avail cut it off and a buddy pulled me out waited close to twenty minutes and tried a crank just a key bump engine turned over but a lot of water came out exhaust pipe looked at intake filter is wet but not soaked so my buddy towed me gotten the road so I can get to it with wife's car so now my question is what do I do now?
Well, I would dry filter, drain oil and replace.
That should be about all you need to do.
Spark plugs may foul to..
I'm not an expert, but this is what I do.
Never an issue from a dirt bike all the way to a truck.
Definitely change the oil. I would also pull plugs and crank the engine to try and push any water out to prevent hydro locking and all of the issues that come with that
I would change all fluids (oil, trans, diff). If you have an older TJ, pull the distributor cap and dry it out if needed. You might pull the starter to make sure it's not full of dirt/debri and get a new air filter.
What he said. Change all the fluids is a must. I think your buddies should buy you a sea captains hat. Your new official name would be U-Boat Commander- U Boat for short. We would have tried it too but when stuck, with pictures your going to take a beating, lol. Two strokes are much easier to get going after being submerged. Key is how wet are the electronics and get them dried out ASAP. I would recommend the full snorkel kit for you "U Boat".
Good luck. You should be fine if it didn't hydro lock and bend some valves.
Hey fellows, any time you stay on deep water for a while, with the engine under water, DO NOT ATTEMP TO CRANK THE ENGINE UNTIL YOU DO THIS !!!!......Remove all spark plugs, change the oil and make sure everything is clean and free of water. Did you know that water in the cylinders, will bend the rods ? Once you have cleared all the water from the oil, you crank the engine without the spark plugs, if there is water you will see it fly out of the plugs holes. After clearing the water out of the cylinders, then you try to start the engine with new oil on it. Remember Oil is lighter than water. Remember were is the oil pick up pipe inside the engine ( at the bottom ). You will be shooting water through the engine and damage the bearings if you run water on it.
Then, after the jeep starts, you shall at least inspect ALL THE FLUIDS on your Jeep, like Trany, Differentials, Transfer Case, etc. Expect bad u-joints and bearings later.
Jeeps are AWESOME 4X4 MACHINES, but rather terrible as amphibious vehicles. Jeeps are for off road, not for on water.

Sage advice. Works for all motors. I've had to do this on a boat motor and a buddy's dirt bike.
Once it does start run it hot for a while to burn up condensation. Boats for example, are recommended to keep it revved at 60%+ throttle for 30 minutes
For future reference, NEVER shut it off if it's submerged like that. All that pressure coming out of the motor is your friend. You can hydrolock with water coming up the back, too.
Yep remove your spark plugs before cranking it any more. Depending on how much water got into the engine and how much cranking was done with that water in the engine, you could already have major engine damage.
At the very least remove all of the spark plugs and crank it to get the water out of the combustion chambers.
CHANGE ALL THE FLUIDS !!!!!!!!!!! If the oil is contaminated run about ten minutes and change oil and filter again. I have fished out boats that went swimming and even if its sealed for water use it will get water in it if it goes swimming. A vehicle is not sealed like a boat so it WILL be full of water. CHANGE ALL THE FLUIDS!!!!!!!!
The reason that I found the question amusing is that any water in the engine can damage it. One can get water in the engine at low levels if driving through it fast for long periods. I am no expert by any means, but if I were going off road and driving through water, I would properly research it, and modify my vehicle accordingly, before ruining my Wrangler. I have seen Forum members discussing this issue and properly modifying their vehicles. I have heard members talking about transmission breathers, snorkels, etc. And then, I have seen unfortunate situations such as this thread, where the Wrangler is possibly ruined. It saddens me. And driving off road is suppose to be a fun event.
Ok so I didn't hydrolock the motor it ran fine for about 30 miles going 60mph the alternator went out and I fowled the plugs but she ran fine got to replace alternator and plugs and she's good to go. I did go slow in the water had wife and child in so no hauling ass. Once it was stuck I shut it off didn't know how long I would be there and which way I was going to pull it out and If there was deeper ruts anywhere else.
Hang, I hope you are lucky, but believe me....check ALL THE FLUIDS !!!! Submarining a Jeep ( new word ? ), is a silent killer, will hunt the Jeep and you will remember our Been There Done That wisdom....later.
Ok sorry for the delay but I got jeep running again and had a small child to look after. So the alternator was a direct result of my swim with the jeep there was lots of trash it and as everyone knows water and electricity do not mix well. Once the jeep was pulled out of its swimming pool it sat overnight I went back the next day and pulled plugs cranked it a few times there wasn't a lot of water more fuel than anything. Then I put old plugs back in and drove it about 30 miles to a friend's house. During that drive the alternator went out and had a heel of a time changing gears with clutch almost had to force it. Once I got to friend's it started to run rough and died. And as battery was running things not enough to crank again so I called it a night. Went back the next day got new alternator and plugs. Changed both and got a jump. She runs great except for an exhaust leak sounds like Shit, it may be there is some mud and crap in there not sure but she got me home just fine. Now I checked oil at every step several times to be sure I want running chocolate milk. And what I think what saved me was I didn't hit the lake fast I eased into it and once I knew I was not getting out I shut it off, there have been a few tell me that I should have let it run but I didn't know how long it would take my buddy to come help and did not know if intake was under that alone told me to shut her down. Now I know i was very lucky and I don't plan to do this again but I have been to this cabin a few times in crappy weather and nothing like this has happened. What I didn't know was it had been raining there for several days before. My friend failed to mention that. Any who I will change all fluids and take a pressure washer to inside (joking). Oh almost forgot water did come inside on passenger seat it was 2 inches from the top of the seat. Nice huh I got some pics of the water coming out once we got to solid land I'll post them. The one pic is the next day it's the lake I was in.
