Grease VS Oil in Rear Differential

I have had a whining noise in the rear end for some time now and the mechanic opened it up and said the bearings were ok but that some other part (he didnt know the english name of it,looked like a gear to me)could use to be replaced but they dont sell individual parts over here, only the whole rear axle. Long story short he put very heavy oil or possibly even grease from what I could tell, in the rear end and it quieted it down. Claims he has done it on others and it didnt create a problem. Has anyone ever done this or know if it could possibly lead to problems in the future? I figure if it works then great. If not then I would have had to buy the whole rear end anyway to fix it right as they wont sell rear end parts here. Hoping it lasts.
