While jeep is stopped and in neutral I find my gears are grinding more than they should while putting in or out of 4X4 high or low. I have the 4.0 automatic. If I quickly jerk the 4X4 shifter into gear it won't grind but I'm pretty sure that can't be good. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
If you have an owners manual, read it. If I remember right, the instructions in there are to shift into 4 Hi, the vehicle should be moving up to 55 mph and to stop to go into 4 low. From memory here, someone may correct me.
Yes that's normally how it's done. When I'm in neutral and try coming out of 4lo, the gears grind big time unless I just jam it in to 4hi then 2hi coming out of 4lo.
Have you checked that the linkage is adjusted correctly? I had similar problem after removing a body lift and it took 5 minutes to adjust the linkage underneath the floor
