I have found a 2004 rubicon w/ 75000 miles on it. But they say it grinds going into 2nd when you down shift. I don't want to drive down there if it's not worth it. They want 11000 for it. Any ideas on the what the problem might be. Thanks
My six speed was tight into third, I run amsoil now. But never grinding into 2nd. Sounds like what Dennis said above. I think they are around 700 to rebuild if you have it out of the vehicle last time I looked into it.
'04 Rubi with 75,000 for $11k? That's a pretty good deal even if you factor the cost of a tranny rebuild. Then again, what else could be wrong with it?
Mine grinds going into second if i shift to quick, more so when it's cold outside. I had the fluid changed and that helped, but I still have to be conscious because every once in a while I try and shift to quick and it'll grind slightly. Mine is a daily driver so I've learned to drive it as is, which means slow shifts for me. Quote to rebuilt was around $1200 from a reputable shop.
If the seller will let you take the jeep schedule an apt with a shop (or Dealer) for an evaluation. At least then you'll have a better idea what you're getting into.
One more thing on Jeep transmissions, they have the Catalytic converters right next to them on 2007's and other models, they get hotter the h3ll. Thus, you are basically frying your tranny. There is a site out there that lists the heat of your transmission and directly links it to fail time. The Jeep design guarantees you are ruining your tranny with every mile you drive. My Cat is 4" from my tranny and gets 500+ degress or more, think about it.
Find one that does not grind. You don't want to get into a vehicle with known issues. You should assume the transmission will need a full rebuild and negotiate that into the purchase price, otherwise if it were me, I'd pass on the deal.
I did an auto to manual swap on a 300zx and the 100 Dollar salvage yard 5 SPd I put in would grind on a 1st to 2nd shift but with time and no speed shifts but only gradual 1 to 2 shifts it improved greatly to the point that a brisk shift was fine but a speed shift would still grind so with no abusive shifting the syncro issue actually improved dramatically which really surprised me
I think I would consider it for three reasons
A seller who is that upfront about disclosing an issue is a plus
You can see for yourself how bad it is
Parts for syncro are minimal cost so if you do labor yourself you can learn something fix it right for little money and increase pride in ownership
Jeeps I personally would run away from
Rust number one
4 banger
6 speed tranny
