Ok guys, my 00 Tj auto with newly rebuilt trans (~1 yr ago) was a half qt low on fluid yesterday. Only had unopened Dextron -III in garage. So put 1/2 qt in to top off! Am I screwed here for using next 2 days for plowing? Thx all so much -Tim

Here's my reply to your PM since your inbox is full....

A half-quart of Dexron III won't cause any problems in your 32RH but in the future, avoid mixing ATF types. It is better to run a half-quart low until you can add the exact factory recommended ATF. There are a lot of ATFs that are incompatible with various transmissions so it pays to stick with ATF+4 for your 32RH auto. Checking with the various ATF manufacturers confirmed that a little Dexron III won't cause any problems in your 32RH like some ATFs can.

Jerry,
Thanx so much for your quick response! You've (again) saved my life! Knew you, above anyone would know the answer - good or bad. Really, thanx! I'm so relieved that the 1/2 qt of Dex won't do harm for the next few days. Btw, I'll clear my Inbox now (didn't know there was a limit).

After this week, should I flush it (would have to have it sucked/replaced? As skid plate is partially welded to frame(don't ask) till I can repair this next summer. Please keep up the great, factual responses. I know everyone sincerely appreciates it. Also, this forum in general really ROCKS! Have gleaned so much info over the year I've had my TJ toy and been on the forum. Thanx so much again! Cheers, Tim

Flushing is easiest if you disconnect the output line (passenger side) from the radiator and just pump the old ATF exiting the transmission cooler inside the radiator into a large container by running the engine with the transmission in Neutral so it will pump. Add fresh ATF+4 via a funnel placed in the dipstick tube as the old fluid drains out, it will eventually turn bright clear red indicating you're done. Be sure to change the filter too which is inside the pan. Top up after checking the ATF level with the engine running, transmission warmed up, and the transmission in Neutral.

Jerry, don't have connect to radiator. PO, when rebuilding trans put step cooler in. Is this then a problem flushing? Remember, skid is welded to frame in front. I could direct a willing shop to follow your directions however. 4 mos ago I had a shop ( not using those clowns again) evacuate with some hi tech mach that added new fluid as old was being sucked out

P1492 has nothing to do with the transmission, that code is indicating the battery is overheating, possibly from being charged at too high of a rate. Have the battery 'load tested' and get the alternator checked out.

P.s. the battery temperature sensor is that round plastic disc mounted directly under the battery

I dunno, that's why I suggested you first have a good battery shop perform a "load test" on the battery and if they say the battery is ok, have the alternator tested. Shorted cells inside the battery can cause it to overheat which would trip that CEL, and a bad alternator can also overcharge the battery which would overheat it too.

Jerry OK Thanx. At sears now where I got the battery last week..Turns out there are 2 types of sears platinum batteries! I got the wrong one. Should've have the Deep Cycle version! Sensor code is gone this morn. Why? Battery was drawing so much current yesterday ( down from 14v normal, to 12.1) at height of plowing batt temp got so hi sensor tripped! They're swapping batt now. What a relief! Also, trans shop is chging trans filter, fluild (what type - syn? - should i have them use?) tomorrow. So, all should be good there too! Thanks so much.
