Half Door Latch Mechanism

I've been having trouble with my passenger door for as long as I've owned it, and I decided to give it a shot at fixing it myself. The outside handle opens the door rarely- I have to pull it in a certain way, by pushing my thumb against the right side of the handle, while lightly pulling on the left side of the handle. I have to do this several times fast to get the damn thing to open.

Last night I took apart the door completely, and I believe the problem is in the latch assembly. I've greased it and put it all back together, but the latch itself won't move like it's supposed to. I can force it with a screwdriver, but the mechanisms that are supposed to do it don't work. If anyone is mechanically inclined, or has put together their latch before, I could sure use some help. I can take apart the latch assembly again and post plenty of pictures, anything that will help me figure this out.

On my 97 half doors, the outside door handle was moving the mechanism inside the door, but not moving it ENOUGH.

For reference, this would be a pic of your drivers door mechanism.

There is a metal clip on the threaded rod.

The metal clip was easy to pop off the threaded rod - moved it about 1/4" toward the door latch and clipped it back on and now the opening mechanism has its full range of movement.

The arrow shows where the metal clip was before I moved it.

I was actually looking at your posts about it last night, and unfortunately I messed with the wrong part before trying that. It sounds like that might've fixed my problem. My problem now is the latch itself. The locking rods work, but the latch itself won't open with the handle rods.

I've got the whole latch assembly put back together, but I can't get the latch itself to open up when one of the rods from the door handles is pulled. It's supposed to spring open, but it doesn't.

Finally got the latch assembly back together, and it works nicely. And to top it off, I took Wesboy's advice and moved the metal clip a little bit, and my door works like it's never worked before (which it hasn't). Thank you so much!

Having the same problem think I will try it tomorrow. It's too hot and I'm too pissed off.

Let me know if you get stuck. I've got a pretty grasp of how to fix it now. Check all of your plastic Mopar clips- part of why mine stopped working was one of my clips broke.

Nah mine was the lift mechanism that was bent outwards. I had to lift up part and bend it back.
